Thibault Liger-Belair is the cousin to Vicomte Liger Belair of Vosne Romanee. In 2001 he took over an old family property in Nuits St Georges, taking back the vines which had been contracted out to various share croppers, and leased a cuverie just down the road. The family jewels (his branch) consist of Richebourg, Clos de Vougeot and Nuits St Georges Les St Georges, to which he has added further vineyards and a few additional cuvees made from purchased grapes. Thibault Liger-Belair produces two different Hautes-Cotes de Nuits Le Clos du Prieure and La Corvee de Villy. Both are red and come from vines located up above Nuits-Saint-Georges on the Chaux plateau. The vines are now certified organic and farmed biodynamically, with horses used to plough the vineyards where possible. The grapes are rigorously sorted on a table de tri, then destalked and fermented without much punching down or pumping over. They will be racked once during the elevage, but Thibault is not afraid of reductive flavours at this stage which, he feels, adds to the eventual substance and complexity of the wine. The oak regime is not to exceed 50% new barrels but also not to use any barrels more than three years old. The natural style of Thibault s wines is plump and full-bodied, though the benefits of his farming methods seem to be bringing a more mineral aspect to the fruit as well. About Thibault Liger Belair

Thibault Liger Belair stands as a dynamic force in contemporary Burgundy, blending tradition and innovation in the heart of the region. Born into a family with deep roots in the wine world—his ancestors founded the Nuits-Saint-Georges-based Maison Liger-Belair in 1720—Thibault represents the ninth generation to carry the legacy. After studying viticulture and oenology in Beaune and gaining business experience in Paris, he returned to Burgundy in 2001 to start his own eponymous domaine, determined to forge his own path while honoring his heritage.

The domaine began with inherited family parcels, including prestigious holdings in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée, and Richebourg Grand Cru. Thibault quickly expanded his reach, acquiring small but exceptional plots in Moulin-à-Vent in Beaujolais, where he has championed a more terroir-driven, Burgundian approach to Gamay. Today, the estate covers approximately 7.5 hectares in Burgundy and 8 hectares in Moulin-à-Vent, all farmed with meticulous attention to detail.

Thibault Liger Belair is a passionate advocate for organic and biodynamic viticulture. Since 2004, all his vineyards have been cultivated organically, with certification following in 2009. He employs biodynamic practices to further enhance soil vitality and vine health, believing that healthy vineyards are the foundation of expressive, authentic wines. Manual work in the vineyards is prioritized, including hand-harvesting and careful selection of grapes, ensuring only the best fruit reaches the cellar.

In the winery, Thibault combines traditional Burgundian techniques with thoughtful experimentation. He often employs whole-cluster fermentation, especially in top cuvées, to bring complexity and structure to the wines. Fermentations are conducted with indigenous yeasts, and élevage takes place in French oak barrels, with a judicious use of new oak that respects the character of each terroir. His wines are bottled with minimal intervention, aiming for purity, precision, and transparency of origin.

The resulting wines from Thibault Liger Belair are celebrated for their depth, energy, and sense of place. The Burgundy reds, from village-level Nuits-Saint-Georges to the grand cru Richebourg, display layered aromatics, refined tannins, and a balance of power and finesse. His Moulin-à-Vent bottlings have played a pivotal role in elevating the status of Beaujolais cru wines, offering age-worthy, complex expressions that rival those of the Côte d’Or.

Thibault’s philosophy centers on respect—for the land, for tradition, and for the individuality of each vineyard. He is deeply involved in every step of production, from vineyard management to blending and bottling, and is recognized for his thoughtful, open-minded approach. His wines are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate their authenticity, vibrancy, and capacity to evolve with age.

Through his work, Thibault Liger Belair has helped redefine the possibilities of both Burgundy and Beaujolais, bridging past and future while remaining steadfast in his commitment to quality and terroir expression. His domaine continues to be a benchmark for thoughtful, terroir-driven winemaking in France.
