About Domaine Tortochot
Domaine Tortochot is a family-owned estate located in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin, within Burgundy’s prestigious Côte de Nuits region. The domaine’s roots trace back to the late 19th century, and today it is managed by Chantal Tortochot, who represents the fourth generation of her family to oversee the vineyards and winemaking. Under her stewardship, the estate has embraced both tradition and innovation, focusing on sustainable practices and meticulous attention to detail in both the vineyard and cellar.
The estate covers approximately 12 hectares, with holdings in some of the most esteemed appellations of Gevrey-Chambertin, including several Premier Cru and Grand Cru parcels such as Lavaux Saint-Jacques, Champeaux, Mazis-Chambertin, and Charmes-Chambertin. The vines, predominantly Pinot Noir, are cultivated with a focus on expressing the unique terroir of each plot. Chantal Tortochot has implemented organic viticulture throughout the estate, achieving certification in 2013, and she continues to advance environmentally conscious methods, such as manual harvesting and minimal intervention in both vineyard and winery.
In the cellar, Domaine Tortochot employs traditional Burgundian techniques combined with a thoughtful, modern approach. Grapes are sorted rigorously to ensure only the highest quality fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in open wooden vats, and the wines are aged in French oak barrels, with a proportion of new oak carefully chosen to complement but not overpower the character of each wine. The result is a collection of wines that highlight the purity, elegance, and complexity of Gevrey-Chambertin’s terroirs.
Domaine Tortochot’s wines are celebrated for their depth, structure, and ability to age gracefully. The village-level Gevrey-Chambertin offers vibrant fruit and approachable tannins, while the Premier Cru and Grand Cru bottlings display greater concentration, complexity, and a remarkable sense of place. Each cuvée reflects the nuances of its specific vineyard site, from the robust and spicy character of Mazis-Chambertin to the refined silkiness of Charmes-Chambertin.
Chantal Tortochot is recognized for her commitment to quality and her role in promoting the reputation of Gevrey-Chambertin wines internationally. She is an advocate for sustainable viticulture and active in the local wine community. The domaine’s philosophy centers on respect for the land, careful stewardship of the vines, and a dedication to producing wines that authentically represent their origin.
Today, Domaine Tortochot is sought after by collectors and wine enthusiasts worldwide. The estate’s wines are distributed internationally and feature on the lists of top restaurants and retailers. Despite this acclaim, the domaine remains true to its family roots, balancing tradition with forward-thinking practices to ensure the continued excellence and authenticity of its wines for generations to come.
