About Domaine Jean Marc Bouley
Domaine Jean Marc Bouley is a family-run estate located in Volnay, at the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. The Bouley family’s winemaking roots in the region date back to the early 14th century, with the current domaine established in 1919. Today, it is managed by Thomas Bouley, who took over from his father Jean-Marc in 2012. Thomas has continued the family’s tradition while bringing a modern, thoughtful approach to both vineyard management and winemaking, earning high regard for his meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality.
The domaine comprises around 9 hectares of vineyards, primarily in Volnay but also extending into Pommard and Beaune. The holdings include several prestigious Premier Cru sites such as Volnay Clos des Chênes, Volnay Les Caillerets, Volnay Carelle Sous la Chapelle, and Pommard Les Rugiens. The vineyards are farmed using sustainable practices, with a focus on maintaining the health and vitality of the soils. Since 2012, Thomas Bouley has emphasized organic methods, including the use of cover crops and minimal chemical intervention, with many parcels cultivated entirely by hand.
In the cellar, the philosophy centers on expressing the unique character of each terroir. Grapes are harvested by hand and sorted rigorously to ensure only the highest quality fruit is used. Vinification is gentle and precise, with a preference for whole bunch fermentation in some cuvées to add aromatic complexity and structure. The wines are aged in French oak barrels, with new oak kept to a modest proportion to avoid overpowering the purity of the fruit and the nuances of the individual vineyard sites.
Domaine Jean Marc Bouley’s wines are celebrated for their elegance, balance, and depth. They display the classic perfume and finesse of Volnay, with vibrant red fruit, floral notes, and silky tannins. The Pommard wines offer a slightly firmer structure and darker fruit profile, while the Beaune bottlings are noted for their supple texture and approachability. Across the range, the wines show remarkable transparency to their origins, reflecting both the diversity of the Bouley holdings and the subtlety of Thomas Bouley’s winemaking.
Under Thomas’s leadership, the domaine has gained increasing recognition among Burgundy enthusiasts and critics alike. Production remains limited, as the focus is firmly on quality over quantity. The wines are highly sought after, offering both immediate pleasure and the potential to age gracefully over many years. Domaine Jean Marc Bouley stands as a benchmark for the Volnay appellation, combining centuries of family heritage with a dynamic, forward-thinking approach that continues to push the boundaries of excellence in Burgundy.
