About Thomas Morey

Domaine Thomas Morey is a family-owned wine estate located in the heart of Chassagne-Montrachet, Burgundy, France. The Morey family’s winemaking history in the region dates back to the mid-17th century, with generations cultivating and producing wines in the prestigious Côte de Beaune. Thomas Morey established his own domaine in 2007 after working alongside his father, Bernard Morey, and today runs the estate with his wife Sylvie. Their philosophy is centered on respect for tradition, the terroir, and the environment, aiming to produce wines that are true reflections of their origin.

The domaine covers 13 hectares of vineyards, primarily located in Chassagne-Montrachet but also extending into Saint-Aubin, Santenay, and Puligny-Montrachet. The vineyard holdings include several notable Premier Cru parcels such as Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Embrazées, Les Chenevottes, and Les Caillerets, as well as village appellations and regional Bourgogne plots. The estate cultivates both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with a slight majority of their production focused on white wines, which are emblematic of Chassagne-Montrachet’s reputation for exceptional white Burgundy.

Vineyard work at Domaine Thomas Morey is guided by a commitment to sustainable viticulture. The team employs environmentally friendly practices, including ploughing the soils, maintaining grass cover between rows, and avoiding the use of chemical herbicides. Treatments in the vineyard are limited and carefully chosen to minimize environmental impact, with a focus on preserving soil health and biodiversity. Harvesting is conducted entirely by hand to ensure optimal grape quality and careful selection of fruit.

In the cellar, Thomas Morey combines traditional Burgundian methods with a modern, precise approach. Grapes are sorted and gently pressed, with whites undergoing fermentation in oak barrels using indigenous yeasts. The wines are aged in French oak, with a moderate proportion of new barrels to preserve the purity and expression of the fruit and terroir. Reds are vinified with careful extraction to emphasize finesse and elegance. The aging process typically lasts 12 to 18 months, depending on the cuvée and vintage characteristics.

The resulting wines from Domaine Thomas Morey are characterized by their balance, minerality, and ability to express the nuances of their specific vineyard sites. The Chassagne-Montrachet whites display freshness, complexity, and a distinctive mineral backbone, while the reds are noted for their finesse, aromatic purity, and silky tannins. The domaine’s wines are sought after by enthusiasts and collectors for their authenticity and their capacity to age gracefully.

Domaine Thomas Morey welcomes visitors for tastings by appointment, offering an opportunity to discover the estate’s philosophy and the diversity of its terroirs. The domaine’s commitment to quality, respect for the environment, and deep roots in the history of Chassagne-Montrachet make it a notable producer in Burgundy’s celebrated wine landscape.
