About Le Macioche
Le Macioche is a boutique wine estate nestled in the heart of Montalcino, Tuscany, celebrated for its dedication to producing classic Brunello di Montalcino. The estate spans just under seven hectares, with four hectares planted to Sangiovese, the region’s defining grape. The vineyards are situated at an elevation of approximately 450 meters above sea level, benefitting from optimal sunlight exposure and the cooling influence of the nearby Monte Amiata. This unique microclimate, combined with the area’s rocky, galestro-rich soils, creates an environment ideal for cultivating Sangiovese grapes of remarkable character and complexity.
Le Macioche was founded in the 1980s by a couple passionate about the potential of Montalcino’s terroir. Over the years, the estate has changed hands but has always remained committed to small-scale, hands-on viticulture and winemaking. In 2017, the Cotarella family, renowned Italian winemakers, acquired Le Macioche and brought a renewed focus on sustainability and quality. Under their stewardship, the estate has embraced organic farming practices, eschewing chemical fertilizers and pesticides in favor of natural methods that nurture the land’s biodiversity and health.
In the cellar, Le Macioche employs a minimalist approach, allowing the vineyard’s unique expression to shine through in every bottle. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, preserving the purity and freshness of the Sangiovese fruit. The wines are then aged in traditional large Slavonian oak casks, a practice that imparts subtle structure and allows the varietal’s vibrant character to develop gracefully over time. The result is a portfolio of wines that capture the essence of Montalcino: elegant, aromatic, and deeply expressive.
The estate’s flagship wine, Brunello di Montalcino, is crafted exclusively from estate-grown Sangiovese. It is distinguished by its refined tannins, lively acidity, and intense flavors of red cherry, wild herbs, and earthy undertones. Le Macioche also produces a Rosso di Montalcino, a younger and more approachable expression of Sangiovese that showcases the grape’s bright fruit and supple texture. Both wines are noted for their balance, finesse, and ability to age gracefully, reflecting the estate’s meticulous attention to detail from vineyard to bottle.
Le Macioche’s commitment to quality extends beyond the vineyard and cellar. The estate is deeply invested in preserving the cultural and natural heritage of Montalcino. By maintaining traditional winemaking methods and embracing sustainable agriculture, Le Macioche ensures that its wines are not only a reflection of the land but also a contribution to the ongoing legacy of the region. The estate welcomes visitors for tastings and tours, offering an intimate glimpse into the artistry and passion that define its approach to winemaking. Through its dedication to authenticity and excellence, Le Macioche continues to earn acclaim among wine enthusiasts and collectors seeking the true taste of Montalcino.
