About Avignonesi

Avignonesi is a leading wine producer located in the heart of Tuscany, Italy, specifically in the Montepulciano region. The estate spans over 400 hectares, with about 180 hectares under vine, making it one of the largest organic vineyards in Italy. Founded in the mid-1970s, Avignonesi has deep roots in Tuscan winemaking traditions, though the estate’s name dates back to a historic family from Montepulciano. In 2009, Belgian entrepreneur Virginie Saverys acquired Avignonesi, ushering in a new era focused on sustainability, quality, and innovation.

Under Saverys’ stewardship, Avignonesi underwent a complete transformation, converting all vineyards to certified organic and biodynamic agriculture. This commitment to environmental stewardship is reflected in every aspect of production, from soil management and biodiversity initiatives to the use of renewable energy. The estate’s philosophy centers on expressing the unique terroir of Montepulciano, with a focus on Sangiovese, the region’s flagship grape, and other traditional varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malvasia.

Avignonesi is best known for its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a celebrated red wine that showcases the elegance and complexity of Sangiovese. The estate produces several expressions of Vino Nobile, including the classic style, a single-vineyard Grandi Annate, and a Riserva, each reflecting meticulous vineyard management and minimal intervention in the cellar. The wines are characterized by vibrant acidity, refined tannins, and layers of red fruit, floral, and earthy notes, embodying the essence of the Montepulciano terroir.

Another hallmark of Avignonesi is its Vin Santo di Montepulciano, widely regarded as one of the finest examples of this traditional Tuscan dessert wine. Produced using the appassimento method, in which grapes are dried on mats before fermentation, the Vin Santo is aged in small casks called caratelli for up to a decade. The result is a luscious, amber-hued wine with intense flavors of dried fruit, honey, and spice, offering remarkable depth and longevity.

Innovation is a key part of Avignonesi’s identity. The estate continually experiments with new techniques in both the vineyard and winery, such as spontaneous fermentation, extended maceration, and the use of large oak casks to preserve the purity of the fruit. Avignonesi also invests in research and development, collaborating with universities and viticultural experts to enhance sustainability and quality.

Visitors to Avignonesi can experience its commitment to excellence firsthand through guided tours, tastings, and gourmet experiences at the estate’s wine bar and restaurant. The property is also home to a variety of biodiversity projects, including olive groves, vegetable gardens, and beehives, further reflecting the estate’s holistic approach to agriculture.

Today, Avignonesi is recognized as a benchmark for organic and biodynamic winemaking in Tuscany, producing wines that are both authentic and distinctive. Through its dedication to tradition, innovation, and environmental responsibility, Avignonesi continues to shape the future of Tuscan wine while honoring its rich heritage.
