Mousse Fils winery
Moussé Fils is a family-owned Champagne producer based in the village of Cuisles, in the Vallée de la Marne. Founded in 1923 by Eugène Moussé, the estate has been passed down through four generations, each contributing to its evolution and reputation for quality. Today, Cedric Moussé leads the domaine, continuing the family’s dedication to sustainable viticulture and expressive winemaking. The estate covers around 10 hectares, with vineyards primarily located in Cuisles and neighboring villages such as Jonquery, Châtillon-sur-Marne, and Vandières. The soils here are unique, featuring a layer of green clay over limestone, which imparts distinctive minerality and freshness to the wines. Moussé Fils is celebrated for its commitment to Pinot Meunier, a grape often overlooked in Champagne but central to the house’s identity. The majority of their plantings are Pinot Meunier, with smaller proportions of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, reflecting the terroir of the Marne Valley.
Viticulture at Moussé Fils is rooted in respect for the environment. The estate is certified HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) and is committed to organic practices, with grass cover, minimal chemical use, and a focus on biodiversity throughout the vineyards. Cedric Moussé has introduced innovative techniques, such as using plant-based treatments and encouraging natural predators to maintain vine health. This sustainable approach extends into the cellar, where Moussé Fils employs minimal intervention. Fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts, and the wines undergo extended aging on lees to build texture and complexity. Dosage is kept low, allowing the purity of the fruit and the character of the terroir to shine through in each cuvée.
The Moussé Fils portfolio includes a range of Champagnes, from non-vintage blends to single-vineyard and vintage bottlings. The flagship wine, L’Or d’Eugène, is a tribute to the founder and is crafted mainly from Pinot Meunier, blended with reserve wines from a perpetual solera system started in 2003. This approach lends remarkable depth and consistency from year to year. Other notable cuvées include the Terre d’Illite, a single-village expression from Cuisles, and the Les Vignes de Mon Village, which highlights the nuances of specific parcels. The estate also produces limited releases, such as special vintage Champagnes and single-parcel bottlings, reflecting Cedric Moussé’s passion for experimentation and terroir expression.
Moussé Fils Champagnes are recognized for their generosity, vibrant fruit, and distinct minerality, hallmarks of the Marne Valley and the estate’s clay-rich soils. The wines balance freshness and structure, making them both approachable in youth and capable of aging gracefully. Cedric Moussé’s philosophy marries tradition with innovation, honoring the family’s legacy while pushing the boundaries of what Pinot Meunier and Champagne can achieve. The estate’s dedication to sustainability, authenticity, and quality has earned it a loyal following among sommeliers, collectors, and wine lovers worldwide.
Through a century of family stewardship, Moussé Fils has established itself as a benchmark for grower Champagne in the Vallée de la Marne. The estate’s focus on Pinot Meunier, sustainable practices, and terroir-driven winemaking continues to set it apart, offering wines that are both deeply rooted in tradition and expressive of their unique origin.
