Le Mortelle winery

Le Mortelle is a Tuscan wine estate located in the heart of Maremma, near Castiglione della Pescaia, in the province of Grosseto. Owned by the Antinori family since 1999, the estate covers over 270 hectares, with approximately 170 hectares dedicated to vineyards. The property’s unique geographical position, nestled between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the rolling hills of southern Tuscany, provides an ideal environment for viticulture. The name “Le Mortelle” derives from the wild myrtle bushes native to the area, highlighting the estate’s deep connection to its natural surroundings.

The vineyards at Le Mortelle are planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and a selection of white grape varieties such as Vermentino, Ansonica, and Viognier. The estate’s approach focuses on sustainability and respect for the land, employing organic farming methods and careful vineyard management to preserve the natural balance of the ecosystem. The soils, a mix of sand, clay, and silt, combined with the mild coastal climate, allow for the production of wines with remarkable freshness, elegance, and complexity.

The centerpiece of Le Mortelle is its state-of-the-art winery, partially built underground to minimize environmental impact and maintain optimal conditions for winemaking. The gravity-flow facility allows for gentle handling of the grapes, ensuring the preservation of their aromatic and flavor integrity. The architecture seamlessly blends with the landscape, reflecting the estate’s philosophy of harmony between human activity and nature.

Le Mortelle produces several notable wines, including the flagship “Poggio alle Nane,” a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a touch of Carménère, which showcases the estate’s commitment to crafting expressive, terroir-driven reds. The white “Vivia,” made from Vermentino, Ansonica, and Viognier, captures the vibrant character of the coastal terroir, offering freshness and aromatic intensity. Each wine reflects the estate’s dedication to quality, innovation, and the authentic expression of the Maremma region.

In addition to its viticultural pursuits, Le Mortelle is also home to orchards, olive groves, and a farm that produces a variety of fruits, vegetables, and extra virgin olive oil. This holistic approach to agriculture underscores the estate’s commitment to biodiversity and sustainable land stewardship. Visitors to Le Mortelle can enjoy guided tours of the vineyards and winery, tastings of the estate’s wines and farm products, and a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside from the tasting room.

Le Mortelle’s integration of tradition, innovation, and environmental consciousness has made it a benchmark for modern winemaking in Maremma. The Antinori family’s vision and expertise continue to drive the estate forward, ensuring that each bottle from Le Mortelle is a testament to the unique character of its land and the enduring legacy of Tuscan wine culture.
