Clos de Tart winery

Clos de Tart is one of Burgundy’s most iconic and historic wine estates, located in the village of Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côte de Nuits. The domaine’s origins date back to 1141, when it was founded by the Cistercian nuns of Tart Abbey. Throughout centuries, Clos de Tart has maintained its identity as a single, walled Grand Cru vineyard, spanning 7.53 hectares. This rare monopole status means the vineyard has always been owned and managed as a single entity, allowing for unparalleled consistency and expression of terroir.

The estate’s vineyard is ideally situated on a gentle slope with east and southeast exposure, benefiting from optimal sunlight. The soils are a complex mix of limestone, clay, and marl, contributing to the depth and elegance of the wines. The vineyard is planted primarily with Pinot Noir, and the vines boast an average age of 60 years, with some parcels over a century old. The viticultural philosophy at Clos de Tart emphasizes respect for the land, with a commitment to organic and biodynamic practices. The team works meticulously by hand, from pruning to harvest, ensuring each vine receives individual attention and care.

In the cellar, the approach blends tradition and innovation. Grapes are hand-picked and carefully sorted to ensure only the finest fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in small, temperature-controlled vats, allowing for precise extraction and preservation of the vineyard’s unique character. The wines are aged in French oak barrels, with a significant proportion of new oak, for 18 to 24 months. This careful élevage imparts structure and complexity while allowing the purity of the fruit and the nuances of the terroir to shine through.

Clos de Tart produces wines that are celebrated for their depth, finesse, and remarkable aging potential. The Grand Cru Pinot Noir expresses a balance of power and elegance, with aromas of red and black fruits, spices, floral notes, and a mineral backbone. On the palate, the wines are both concentrated and refined, with silky tannins and a persistent finish. The domaine’s commitment to excellence at every stage, from vineyard to bottle, ensures that each vintage is a true reflection of its unique site.

The estate has seen only a handful of owners throughout its long history, preserving its singular identity. In 2018, Clos de Tart was acquired by the Pinault family, who have continued the tradition of excellence and investment in the property. Under the stewardship of winemaker Alessandro Noli and a dedicated team, the domaine continues to push for ever greater quality and sustainability.

Clos de Tart welcomes visitors by appointment, offering a rare opportunity to experience the history, terroir, and craftsmanship behind one of Burgundy’s most storied Grand Crus. The estate’s legacy is built on centuries of dedication, and its wines remain a benchmark for Pinot Noir worldwide.
