Castello dei Rampolla winery
Castello dei Rampolla is a historic wine estate located in the heart of Tuscany’s Chianti Classico region, near the village of Panzano. Owned by the Di Napoli family since 1739, the estate is situated in the Conca d’Oro, a natural amphitheater celebrated for its exceptional terroir. The estate spans over 120 hectares, with about 34 hectares dedicated to vineyards, surrounded by olive groves and woodland, reflecting a deep respect for the natural environment.
The philosophy at Castello dei Rampolla centers on harmony with nature, with a commitment to organic and biodynamic principles. The estate has been certified organic since 1994 and follows biodynamic practices to enhance soil vitality and biodiversity. All vineyard work is performed manually, and the use of synthetic chemicals is strictly avoided. The estate’s approach is rooted in the belief that healthy soils and balanced ecosystems yield wines of greater character and authenticity.
The vineyards are planted primarily with Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, with smaller amounts of Petit Verdot and other varieties. The unique microclimate, combined with diverse soils of marl, limestone, and clay, allows for the production of wines with depth, elegance, and complexity. The grapes are harvested by hand, ensuring careful selection and optimal ripeness.
Winemaking at Castello dei Rampolla is guided by minimal intervention, with a focus on expressing the true character of the land. Fermentation takes place in concrete vats using indigenous yeasts. The wines are aged in a combination of French oak barrels and concrete tanks, allowing for gentle maturation and the preservation of purity and freshness. Sulfite use is kept to a minimum, and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration whenever possible.
The estate’s portfolio includes several acclaimed wines. Sammarco, first produced in 1980, is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sangiovese, known for its structure, depth, and aging potential. Vigna d’Alceo, introduced in 1996, is made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, sourced from a single vineyard and representing the pinnacle of the estate’s production. The Chianti Classico is crafted predominantly from Sangiovese, offering classic aromas, vibrant acidity, and refined tannins. Other wines include Trebianco, a white blend, and a rosato, both reflecting the estate’s commitment to quality and terroir expression.
Castello dei Rampolla’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond the vineyard. The estate employs renewable energy, recycles water, and fosters biodiversity through the preservation of natural habitats. The cellar, built into the hillside, is designed to minimize environmental impact and provide optimal conditions for wine aging.
The Di Napoli family continues to oversee all aspects of production, guided by a passion for excellence and respect for tradition. Castello dei Rampolla’s wines are celebrated for their purity, elegance, and ability to age gracefully, embodying the spirit of their unique terroir and the estate’s unwavering commitment to the land.
