Benanti winery
Benanti is a historic Sicilian wine producer located on the slopes of Mount Etna, with roots dating back to the late 19th century. The Benanti family has played a pioneering role in the revival and international recognition of Etna wines, blending tradition with innovation. The estate was revitalized in 1988 by Giuseppe Benanti, who was inspired by his family’s legacy and the unique terroir of Etna. Today, the winery is managed by Giuseppe’s sons, Antonio and Salvino Benanti, who uphold the family’s commitment to quality, authenticity, and respect for the land.
The Benanti vineyards are situated on various sides of Mount Etna, at altitudes ranging from 400 to 1,000 meters above sea level. These vineyards benefit from volcanic soils rich in minerals, significant diurnal temperature variation, and a unique microclimate that fosters the cultivation of indigenous grape varieties. The estate focuses on native Sicilian grapes, including Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Carricante, and Catarratto, which are ideally suited to the volcanic terroir. Benanti employs sustainable viticultural practices, emphasizing manual work in the vineyards and minimal intervention in the cellar to express the distinctive character of each vineyard site.
The winery produces a diverse portfolio of wines, with a particular emphasis on Etna Rosso and Etna Bianco, which showcase the typicality and elegance of the region. Key wines include the Etna Rosso DOC, crafted primarily from Nerello Mascalese, offering notes of red fruit, spices, and minerality, and the Etna Bianco DOC, made predominantly from Carricante, known for its freshness, citrus aromas, and vibrant acidity. Benanti also produces single-vineyard selections, such as the Contrada Cavaliere, Contrada Rinazzo, and Serra della Contessa, which highlight the unique characteristics of specific parcels on Mount Etna.
Benanti’s winemaking philosophy is rooted in a deep respect for the environment and the traditions of Etna. The winery combines modern techniques with time-honored methods, such as spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts and aging in both stainless steel and oak, to preserve the purity and complexity of the wines. The estate’s commitment to quality has earned it numerous accolades and a reputation for producing some of the finest expressions of Etna’s volcanic terroir.
In addition to winemaking, Benanti offers visitors the opportunity to experience the estate through guided tours and tastings. Guests can explore the historic vineyards and cellars, learn about the history and culture of Etna wine, and sample a selection of the estate’s wines paired with local Sicilian cuisine. The winery’s hospitality reflects the Benanti family’s passion for sharing the unique heritage of Etna with wine enthusiasts from around the world.
Benanti’s dedication to authenticity, sustainability, and excellence has positioned it as a leading ambassador for Etna and Sicilian wine. The estate continues to innovate while honoring its rich heritage, striving to capture the essence of Mount Etna in every bottle and contributing to the global appreciation of Sicily’s unique wine culture.
