About Delamain

Delamain Cognac, located in Jarnac in the heart of the Grande Champagne region, is a historic house dedicated exclusively to producing exceptional cognacs. Founded in 1824, the family-run company traces its roots back to 1759, when James Delamain, an Irishman, settled in France and began his involvement in the cognac trade. Over generations, Delamain has remained committed to traditional craftsmanship, valuing patience, expertise, and a deep respect for terroir.

The house is distinguished by its unwavering focus on Grande Champagne, the premier cru of Cognac, recognized for its unique chalky soil and microclimate that yield eaux-de-vie of remarkable finesse and aging potential. Delamain sources only the finest eaux-de-vie from select growers and distillers in this region, ensuring the highest quality at every stage. The house does not produce VS or VSOP cognacs, instead concentrating solely on XO and older expressions, with all cognacs aged a minimum of 20 years.

Delamain’s production process honors time-honored methods. The eaux-de-vie are double distilled in traditional copper pot stills, then aged in seasoned French oak casks, which allow for gentle maturation and the gradual development of complex aromas and flavors. The cellars, situated along the Charente River, offer ideal humidity and temperature conditions for long-term aging. No caramel or artificial coloring is added, and Delamain never uses boisé (oak extracts) or sweeteners, preserving the purity and authenticity of the cognac.

The house’s blending philosophy is rooted in patience and precision. The cellar master, guided by decades of experience, selects and blends eaux-de-vie to achieve a harmonious balance of fruit, floral, and spice notes. Each blend reflects the unique character of Grande Champagne, with a signature elegance, subtlety, and aromatic complexity. The final cognacs are bottled at 40% ABV, ensuring a refined and delicate profile.

Delamain’s portfolio includes several iconic expressions. Pale & Dry XO, first created in 1920, is celebrated for its light color and delicate bouquet, offering notes of vine flowers, vanilla, and dried fruit. Vesper XO, introduced in 1953, is richer and more mature, with deeper flavors of candied fruit, nuts, and spices. The Très Vénérable and Réserve de la Famille bottlings showcase the house’s oldest reserves, with exceptional depth and length, available in limited quantities. Pléiade, a collection of rare single cask and small-batch releases, highlights the diversity and artistry of Delamain’s cellars.

Delamain’s commitment to excellence extends beyond production. The house is dedicated to sustainability and responsible viticulture, working closely with partner growers to promote biodiversity and environmental stewardship. The family’s legacy is preserved through a blend of tradition and innovation, ensuring that each bottle expresses the essence of Grande Champagne and the artistry of generations of cellar masters.

Visitors to Delamain can experience guided tours of the historic cellars and learn about the intricate process of cognac making, from vineyard to glass. The house also offers tastings and bespoke experiences, allowing guests to discover the nuances of its exceptional cognacs in an authentic setting. Delamain’s dedication to quality, heritage, and terroir has earned it a place among the world’s most respected cognac producers, with a reputation built on integrity, expertise, and a passion for the craft.
