About Radikon
Radikon is a pioneering wine producer located in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy, specifically in the area of Oslavia near the Slovenian border. Founded by Stanko Radikon and now led by his son Saša, the estate has gained international acclaim for its unique approach to winemaking, particularly its dedication to orange wines and natural viticulture. The Radikon family has cultivated vines in this region for generations, but it was in the 1990s that Stanko began to challenge conventional winemaking practices, seeking to revive ancient methods that emphasized authenticity and a deep connection to the land.
The estate covers approximately 18 hectares of vineyards, planted mainly with indigenous grape varieties such as Ribolla Gialla, Friulano, and Merlot. The soils are composed of a mix of marl and sandstone, known locally as “ponca,” which imparts a distinctive minerality to the wines. Radikon’s philosophy is rooted in organic farming, with no use of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. The vineyards are managed with great attention to biodiversity and sustainable practices, reflecting a holistic respect for the environment.
In the cellar, Radikon is celebrated for its extended skin-contact fermentation, particularly for white grape varieties. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, destemmed, and then fermented spontaneously with native yeasts. White wines undergo maceration on the skins for periods ranging from several weeks to several months, a technique more commonly associated with red winemaking. This process extracts color, tannins, and complex flavors, resulting in wines with deep hues, pronounced textures, and remarkable aromatic profiles. The wines are aged in large Slavonian oak casks for extended periods, often two to four years, and are bottled without fining, filtration, or the addition of sulfur dioxide, except in minimal amounts when absolutely necessary.
Radikon produces a range of wines, with the Ribolla Gialla and Oslavje blends standing out as flagship offerings. These wines are marked by their amber color, intense aromatics, and layers of flavor that unfold with time in the glass. The reds, primarily based on Merlot and Pinot Grigio, also receive extended skin contact, resulting in robust, structured wines that reflect the same commitment to minimal intervention and terroir expression.
The label’s distinctive half-liter and one-liter bottles, along with their bold packaging, have become iconic in the world of natural wine. Radikon’s wines are intended for those who appreciate complexity, individuality, and the ability to age gracefully. They are best enjoyed with food, where their tannic structure and vibrant acidity can shine alongside a variety of dishes.
Today, Saša Radikon continues to honor his father’s legacy while innovating and refining the estate’s practices. The Radikon approach has inspired a new generation of winemakers in Friuli and beyond, contributing to the global resurgence of orange wines and natural winemaking. The estate remains a benchmark for authenticity, craftsmanship, and a deep-rooted connection to the unique terroir of Oslavia.
