About Castello di Ama
Castello di Ama is a prestigious wine estate located in the heart of Chianti Classico, near the village of Ama within the municipality of Gaiole in Chianti, Tuscany. The estate spans over 500 hectares, with 75 dedicated to vineyards and 40 to olive groves, nestled at an altitude of almost 500 meters. The property is steeped in history, with its origins dating back to the 12th century, and the village of Ama itself still retaining its medieval charm. The current owners, Lorenza Sebasti and Marco Pallanti, have been instrumental in revitalizing the estate since the 1970s, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and excellence in winemaking.
Castello di Ama’s vineyards are planted primarily with Sangiovese, the signature grape of Chianti Classico, alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Chardonnay. The estate is divided into several renowned single vineyards, including Bellavista, San Lorenzo, La Casuccia, and Montebuoni, each with unique microclimates and soils that contribute to the complexity of the wines. The winemaking philosophy emphasizes respect for tradition combined with a forward-looking approach, employing meticulous vineyard management, hand harvesting, and careful selection of grapes.
The estate’s flagship wines include the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo, Vigneto La Casuccia, and Vigneto Bellavista, each expressing the distinct character of their respective vineyards. The range also features Haiku, a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, as well as L’Apparita, a pure Merlot that has gained international acclaim. Castello di Ama also produces a refined Chardonnay, Al Poggio, and a selection of extra virgin olive oils from its groves.
Castello di Ama is committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Vineyard management practices are designed to preserve biodiversity and minimize environmental impact, with a focus on organic farming principles. The estate’s modern winery is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to ensure precision and quality at every stage of production, while aging takes place in a combination of French oak barriques and traditional casks.
Beyond wine, Castello di Ama is also known for its dedication to contemporary art. Since 1999, the estate has hosted the “Castello di Ama per l’Arte Contemporanea” project, inviting internationally acclaimed artists to create site-specific installations that are integrated into the historic buildings and landscape. This unique blend of art, history, and winemaking creates an immersive experience for visitors, who can tour the vineyards, cellars, and art installations, as well as enjoy tastings and gourmet cuisine at the estate’s restaurant, Il Ristoro di Villa Pianigiani.
Castello di Ama’s hospitality extends to elegant accommodations in restored villas and suites, offering guests an opportunity to immerse themselves in the tranquil beauty of the Chianti countryside. The estate’s commitment to quality, innovation, and cultural enrichment has established it as a benchmark for excellence in Tuscany, attracting wine lovers, art enthusiasts, and travelers from around the world.
