About Roger Sabon

Domaine Roger Sabon, founded in 1952 by Roger Sabon in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, is a family-run estate celebrated for its traditional approach to winemaking and its deep roots in the Rhône Valley. The Sabon family has cultivated vineyards in the region since the early 20th century, with Roger’s father, Seraphin, already tending vines before the domaine’s official establishment. Today, the estate is managed by Roger’s sons, Jean-Jacques, Denis, and Gilbert, with the next generation actively involved, ensuring continuity and innovation in the family legacy.

The estate covers approximately 18 hectares, primarily in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with additional plots in Lirac and Côtes du Rhône. The vineyards are characterized by the region’s diverse soils, including galets roulés (large pebbles), sand, limestone, and clay, which contribute to the complexity and depth of the wines. The average age of the vines is impressively high, with some parcels exceeding 100 years, particularly for Grenache, which forms the backbone of many of the domaine’s blends.

Roger Sabon produces a range of wines, with their Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées being the flagship offerings. These include ‘Les Olivets,’ sourced from younger vines and offering early approachability; ‘Réserve,’ which showcases the estate’s old-vine Grenache; and ‘Le Secret des Sabon,’ an exclusive, limited-production wine made from the oldest parcels and known for its power and longevity. The domaine also crafts Lirac and Côtes du Rhône wines, which reflect the same attention to detail and commitment to expressing terroir as their top cuvées.

Viticulture at Roger Sabon is guided by respect for the environment and the unique characteristics of each parcel. The family practices sustainable farming, minimizing chemical interventions and emphasizing manual work in the vineyards. Harvesting is done by hand to preserve fruit integrity, and careful sorting ensures only the healthiest grapes are used in production.

In the cellar, the winemaking philosophy is one of minimal intervention, aiming to highlight the natural qualities of the fruit and the terroir. Fermentation takes place in concrete vats, and aging is conducted in a combination of large foudres, demi-muids, and smaller oak barrels, depending on the cuvée. The use of new oak is restrained, allowing the purity and complexity of the wines to shine through without excessive influence from wood.

Roger Sabon’s wines are known for their balance, aromatic complexity, and ability to age gracefully. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape bottlings, in particular, display layers of ripe fruit, spice, garrigue, and mineral notes, with a structure that supports long-term cellaring. The estate’s commitment to quality and authenticity has earned it a loyal following among collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.

With a history spanning over seven decades and a steadfast dedication to traditional Rhône winemaking, Domaine Roger Sabon continues to be a benchmark for Châteauneuf-du-Pape and southern Rhône wines. The estate’s blend of heritage, meticulous vineyard management, and thoughtful winemaking ensures that each bottle is a true reflection of its origin and the Sabon family’s enduring passion for their craft.
