About Domaine de la Janasse
Domaine de La Janasse, located in the village of Courthézon in the southern Rhône Valley, is a family-owned wine estate established in 1973 by Aimé Sabon. The estate spans over 90 hectares, including prestigious parcels in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes du Rhône, and Vin de Pays. The Sabon family has a deep-rooted history in winemaking, with Aimé’s father, Louis, cultivating vines since the early 20th century. When Aimé returned from military service, he took over the family vineyards and founded Domaine de La Janasse, naming it after the family farmstead. Over the years, the estate has grown under the stewardship of Aimé’s children, Christophe and Isabelle Sabon, who continue to uphold the family’s commitment to quality and tradition.
The estate’s vineyards are planted with a wide range of grape varieties, including Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Carignan, and white varietals such as Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, and Bourboulenc. The diversity of soils—ranging from sandy and pebbly to clay-limestone—enables the production of complex and expressive wines. La Janasse practices sustainable viticulture, with a focus on manual harvesting, low yields, and minimal intervention in the vineyard to preserve the natural character of the grapes and the terroir. The estate is dedicated to environmentally conscious farming, incorporating organic and biodynamic principles to promote biodiversity and soil health.
In the cellar, the winemaking philosophy centers on gentle extraction and precise blending. Grapes are sorted by hand and vinified in concrete vats, with fermentation carried out using native yeasts. Red wines typically undergo long macerations to enhance structure and aromatic complexity, and are aged in a combination of foudres, demi-muids, and barrels to balance fruit purity with subtle oak influence. White wines are fermented and aged on lees to develop texture and freshness. The resulting wines are known for their depth, elegance, and ability to age gracefully.
Domaine de La Janasse produces a diverse portfolio of wines, including several acclaimed cuvées from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, such as the Tradition, Chaupin, and Vieilles Vignes bottlings. The estate also crafts expressive Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages, and Vin de Pays wines, each reflecting their unique terroirs. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds are characterized by their richness, balance, and aromatic intensity, while the whites offer freshness, complexity, and mineral notes. Across all appellations, the wines display the hallmark finesse and depth that have become synonymous with the estate’s name.
Visitors to Domaine de La Janasse are welcomed by appointment to experience tastings and discover the estate’s history and philosophy firsthand. The Sabon family’s hospitality and passion for winemaking are evident in every aspect of the domaine, from the meticulously tended vineyards to the thoughtfully crafted wines. Domaine de La Janasse stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Sabon family, blending tradition and innovation to produce wines that capture the essence of the southern Rhône Valley.
