About Moccagatta
Moccagatta is a family-owned winery located in Barbaresco, in the heart of Italy’s Piedmont region. Established in 1952 by the Minuto family, Moccagatta has become synonymous with the production of high-quality Barbaresco wines, crafted from the Nebbiolo grape. The estate spans about 15 hectares, with vineyards situated in some of the most prestigious crus of the Barbaresco appellation, including Basarin, Bric Balin, and Cole. These distinct vineyard sites allow Moccagatta to express the unique terroir of each site through their single-vineyard bottlings.
The philosophy at Moccagatta centers on respect for tradition, combined with a forward-thinking approach to winemaking. The Minuto family, now led by Franco and Sergio Minuto, emphasizes meticulous vineyard management, low yields, and careful selection of grapes to ensure the highest quality in every bottle. Sustainable practices are prioritized in the vineyards, with a focus on preserving the health of the soil and vines for future generations. Harvesting is done by hand, allowing for precise selection of the best fruit.
In the cellar, Moccagatta balances modern techniques with traditional methods. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, which helps to preserve the purity of fruit and the distinctive character of Nebbiolo. Aging is carried out in a combination of French oak barriques and larger casks, tailored to the needs of each wine and vintage. This approach results in wines that are both elegant and expressive, with refined tannins and complex aromatics.
Moccagatta’s portfolio is anchored by their Barbaresco wines, which showcase the diversity of the region’s soils and microclimates. The Bric Balin Barbaresco, sourced from a south-facing vineyard with calcareous clay soils, is noted for its richness, structure, and aging potential. The Basarin Barbaresco, from a higher altitude site with sandy soils, offers finesse and aromatic complexity. The Cole Barbaresco, produced from a small, select vineyard, stands out for its intensity and depth. In addition to their Barbaresco wines, Moccagatta also produces Langhe Nebbiolo and Dolcetto d’Alba, providing a broader expression of the area’s native grape varieties.
Over the decades, Moccagatta has built a loyal following among wine enthusiasts and collectors, both in Italy and internationally. Their wines are recognized for their clarity of fruit, balance, and ability to age gracefully. The Minuto family’s commitment to quality, respect for the land, and dedication to expressing the true character of Barbaresco has made Moccagatta a distinguished name in Piedmontese viticulture. Visitors to the estate are welcomed with genuine hospitality and the opportunity to experience the unique landscape and wines of Barbaresco firsthand. Through careful stewardship of their vineyards and a thoughtful approach to winemaking, Moccagatta continues to honor the legacy of the region while looking toward the future.
