About Tenuta CastelGiocondo

Tenuta CastelGiocondo is a historic wine estate located in the heart of Montalcino, Tuscany, with roots tracing back to the 12th century. The estate sits on the southwest slopes of Montalcino at altitudes between 300 and 400 meters, an area celebrated for its ideal microclimate and soils for Sangiovese cultivation. CastelGiocondo has long played a pivotal role in the development of Brunello di Montalcino, being among the first four producers to craft this iconic wine in the late 1800s. Today, the estate is owned by the Frescobaldi family, one of Italy’s most distinguished wine dynasties, who have managed the property since 1989 and have invested significantly in its vineyards and cellars.

The estate spans over 815 hectares, of which 235 are dedicated to vineyards. The primary focus is on Sangiovese, the grape behind Brunello di Montalcino, though other varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot are also cultivated for the estate’s other labels. The unique terroir, defined by galestro and clay-rich soils, ensures excellent drainage and mineral complexity, contributing to the elegance and longevity of the wines. Sustainable viticulture is central to CastelGiocondo’s philosophy, with careful attention paid to vineyard management, biodiversity, and minimal intervention to preserve the natural balance of the environment.

CastelGiocondo’s flagship wine is its Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, characterized by its deep ruby color, aromatic complexity, and remarkable structure. The wine undergoes lengthy aging in both oak barrels and bottle, resulting in a harmonious balance of fruit, spice, and tertiary notes. In addition to Brunello, the estate produces a Rosso di Montalcino, offering a more approachable expression of Sangiovese, and Lamaione, a pure Merlot that showcases the estate’s versatility. Other notable wines include Campo ai Sassi, a vibrant Rosso di Montalcino, and Grappa di Brunello, distilled from the pomace of the estate’s Brunello grapes.

Innovation and tradition coexist at Tenuta CastelGiocondo. The Frescobaldi family has introduced modern winemaking techniques, such as temperature-controlled fermentation and meticulous selection of oak barrels, while honoring the estate’s centuries-old heritage. The cellars blend historical architecture with state-of-the-art technology, ensuring optimal conditions for vinification and aging. Every stage, from vineyard to bottle, is overseen by a dedicated team committed to excellence and authenticity.

Visitors to CastelGiocondo can experience guided tours of the vineyards and cellars, wine tastings, and panoramic views of the Montalcino countryside. The estate’s hospitality reflects its commitment to sharing the culture and passion of Tuscan winemaking. Tenuta CastelGiocondo stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Frescobaldi family, the unique terroir of Montalcino, and the pursuit of quality that defines the region’s greatest wines.
