Ronchi di Cialla is a family-run winery located in the Cialla valley within the Friuli Colli Orientali DOC zone of northeastern Italy. Established in 1970 by Paolo and Dina Rapuzzi, the estate was founded with a vision to revive and champion the region’s indigenous grape varieties, particularly Schioppettino, Picolit, and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso. The Rapuzzi family’s commitment to biodiversity and tradition has played a crucial role in saving these rare grapes from extinction, and their work has become a benchmark for sustainable viticulture in Friuli.

The estate covers approximately 28 hectares, of which about 13 are planted to vines. The unique microclimate of the Cialla valley, characterized by cool breezes from the Julian Alps and optimal sun exposure, provides ideal conditions for the cultivation of both red and white grapes. The soils, rich in marl and sandstone, contribute to the complexity and minerality of the wines. Ronchi di Cialla practices organic farming, eschewing chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and focuses on low yields to ensure concentration and quality in every bottle.

Ronchi di Cialla’s portfolio is centered on native Friulian varieties. Their Schioppettino di Cialla, a varietal red wine, is considered a flagship, celebrated for its aromatic complexity, vibrant acidity, and age-worthiness. Other notable reds include Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso and Ciallabianco, a unique white blend of Ribolla Gialla, Picolit, and Verduzzo. The estate is also acclaimed for its sweet wines, particularly Picolit di Cialla, produced from late-harvested, carefully selected grapes.
