About Fattoria di Fiorano
Fattoria di Fiorano is a historic wine estate located on the outskirts of Rome, in the Lazio region of Italy. Founded in the 1940s by Alberico Boncompagni Ludovisi, Prince of Venosa, the estate occupies approximately 200 hectares, with vineyards planted on volcanic soils that impart a distinctive character to the wines. The estate is notable for its early adoption of organic and biodynamic practices, a philosophy embraced long before such approaches became widespread in Italian viticulture. The vineyards are primarily planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malvasia di Candia, as well as Sémillon, reflecting the founder’s innovative spirit and willingness to experiment with both international and native grape varieties.
Fattoria di Fiorano’s history is marked by a sense of mystery and exclusivity. For decades, the estate’s wines were produced in extremely limited quantities, often reserved for family, close friends, and select restaurateurs. Alberico Boncompagni Ludovisi was known for his reclusive nature and meticulous attention to detail, overseeing every aspect of production. He introduced unconventional techniques such as aging wines in concrete vats and practicing minimal intervention in both vineyard and cellar. His commitment to quality and authenticity set Fiorano apart, earning the wines a cult following among connoisseurs and collectors. The estate’s red wines, particularly the Fiorano Rosso made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, became legendary for their depth, longevity, and unique expression of terroir.
In the late 1990s, after years of minimal commercial activity, the estate underwent a revival under the stewardship of Boncompagni Ludovisi’s cousin, Alessandrojacopo Boncompagni Ludovisi. With a renewed vision, Alessandrojacopo restored the vineyards and cellars, maintaining the founder’s organic practices and respect for tradition while introducing selective modernization to ensure the continuity of quality. He also expanded the range of wines produced, reintroducing white varietals and focusing on sustainable agriculture. Today, the estate produces both red and white wines, including Fiorano Rosso, Fiorano Bianco, and Fioranello, each reflecting the unique volcanic terroir and the estate’s commitment to low-intervention winemaking.
Fattoria di Fiorano’s wines are characterized by their elegance, complexity, and ability to age gracefully. The reds exhibit notes of dark fruit, spice, and earthy undertones, while the whites are known for their aromatic intensity and mineral-driven freshness. The estate continues to limit production, ensuring that each bottle reflects the singular qualities of the vineyard and the legacy of its founder. Visitors to the estate can experience guided tours and tastings, offering a glimpse into the rich history and artisanal approach that define Fiorano.
Today, Fattoria di Fiorano stands as a testament to the vision and dedication of its founders, blending tradition with innovation. Its wines, once shrouded in secrecy, are now celebrated for their authenticity and connection to the land, making the estate a unique presence in the Italian wine landscape.
