About Chateau La Gaffeliere
The property now has 38 hectares, 22 of which are 1er Grand Crus Class . Our plots are located in three areas: the limestone plateau with Asterias: layers of 3 to 5 m of clay and green marl wedged between two layers of limestone. The whole rises to about 90m above sea level; the coast facing south to the southwest: It is a privileged location for the cultivation of vines because it allows the accumulation of exposure and a slope favourable to maturation, to the natural drainage of water; moreover, the outcrops of clayey Molasses from Frons dais in the subsoil help to regulate the water and mineral supply of the vine; the foot of the coast: made up of deep carbonated sands by colluviation. These fragile but healthy soils require special attention to allow, through precise work, to bring out finesse and fruit. Created in 1985, the Clos is mainly made from young vines. It is made up of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the percentage of which varies according to the quality of the vintage. This is a 'pleasure wine' with medium aging potential (around 10 years). The work of the vines on the plots of Clos is identical to the work carried out on the plots producing the first wine: pruning, grassing of the soil, manual stripping, green harvesting, manual harvesting. In the cellar, the same gestures punctuate the successive stages of the development of this wine with an identity that is now well established and recognized. Aging is done with 50% new wood; the second wine is aged only in one-wine barrels for 10 to 12 months. In some foreign markets, Clos Gaffeli re is sold under the Dame Gaffeli re label.
