They call them 'Selossians' but they are not a people of aliens. This neologism was coined to identify a movement of small Champagne vignerons who followed in Anselme Selosse's footsteps in abandoning the pure countryside activity, to start elaborating their own champagnes. When Selosse took over the family business in the late 1980s after studying oenology in Beaune, he decided to start producing a champagne that was a lot of wine and less 'bubble'. So he introduced the use of barriques and the batonnage technique, borrowing it from the whites of Burgundy to obtain a new soul from the chardonnays of Avize, which was a very personal voice of identity. His choice was an example for many vignerons of the area around Avize, which inspired by the success achieved in the 90s by Selosse have converted their farms into small Maison of R coltant Manipulant. This is the case of Michel Fallon, a small producer who in the Grand Cru of Avize produces only one champagne from Chardonnay grapes, the blanc de blancs Ozanne. The name is a tribute to the Grand Cru where the grapes are grown, as Ozanne was the ancient name of Avize, called Ozanne la belle until 796, as indicated on the back label. This is a non-vintage, first released on the market about 8 years ago. The wine is produced with fermentation in f t de ch ne, with a vinous style but without heaviness, innovative but without the excesses of some bio that sometimes stress the elements to give a marked and recognizable mark.
