About Jacques Selosse

Jacques Selosse is a distinguished Champagne producer based in the village of Avize in the Côte des Blancs, France. The estate is celebrated for its innovative and highly individualistic approach to winemaking, which has had a profound influence on the world of Champagne. Founded in 1959 by Jacques Selosse, the domaine has been under the stewardship of his son, Anselme Selosse, since 1980. Anselme, who studied at the viticultural school in Beaune, Burgundy, brought with him a Burgundian philosophy, focusing on terroir expression and meticulous vineyard management.

The estate comprises approximately 8 hectares of vineyards, predominantly planted with Chardonnay in Avize, Cramant, Oger, and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, as well as small parcels of Pinot Noir in Aÿ, Ambonnay, and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. The vineyards are cultivated with a strong emphasis on organic and biodynamic principles, eschewing chemical fertilizers and herbicides in favor of natural treatments and manual labor. Anselme Selosse’s approach in the vineyard is to prioritize soil health and biodiversity, believing that the quality and character of the wine are determined primarily by the vitality of the vines and the uniqueness of each parcel.

In the cellar, Selosse’s methods are unconventional by Champagne standards. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, and the wines are aged in oak barrels, many of which are sourced from Burgundy. This use of oak, along with extended lees contact and minimal intervention, imparts a distinctive richness, complexity, and oxidative character to the wines. The house is perhaps best known for its flagship cuvée, Initial, a blend of Chardonnay from three Grand Cru villages, as well as Substance, a solera-style wine that blends multiple vintages to achieve remarkable depth and complexity. Other notable wines include the single-vineyard lieux-dits series, which showcase the individuality of specific parcels.

Selosse’s Champagnes are characterized by their intensity, depth, and layered flavors, often displaying notes of toasted brioche, nuts, honey, and ripe orchard fruits, underpinned by a pronounced minerality. These wines are often described as “vinous,” reflecting a style more akin to great white Burgundy than traditional Champagne. The house’s philosophy extends to extremely low dosage, or sometimes none at all, allowing the purity and complexity of the base wines to shine without excessive sweetness.

Production at Jacques Selosse is limited, with a strong focus on quality over quantity. This, combined with the cult status of the wines among collectors and sommeliers, makes them highly sought after and often difficult to obtain. The domaine’s influence on Champagne is significant, inspiring a new generation of grower-producers to pursue sustainable viticulture and terroir-driven, artisanal winemaking. Anselme Selosse’s commitment to authenticity, experimentation, and respect for nature has established the estate as a benchmark for excellence and innovation in Champagne, offering wines that are both intellectually engaging and profoundly expressive of their origins.
