Poggerino winery
Poggerino is a family-owned wine estate situated in Radda in Chianti, at the heart of the Chianti Classico region in Tuscany. The estate is managed by Piero and Benedetta Lanza, siblings who have dedicated themselves to organic viticulture and the production of expressive Sangiovese wines. Poggerino’s history traces back several generations, with the Lanza family inheriting the property from the Prince Ginori Conti line. Today, Poggerino covers approximately 43 hectares, of which about 12.5 hectares are planted to vines, predominantly Sangiovese, with a small plot of Merlot.
The estate’s vineyards are located at altitudes ranging from 400 to 500 meters above sea level, benefiting from an ideal microclimate and soils rich in galestro, a rocky schist that imparts minerality and structure to the wines. The Lanza family’s philosophy centers on respect for the land and biodiversity. Since 1999, Poggerino has been certified organic, employing sustainable practices such as green manure, natural composting, and minimal intervention in both vineyard and cellar. The estate avoids synthetic chemicals, focusing instead on maintaining healthy soils and balanced vines.
Poggerino’s winemaking approach is characterized by a commitment to purity and terroir expression. Grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted before fermentation, which takes place in concrete tanks using only indigenous yeasts. The wines are aged in large Slavonian oak casks and, in some cases, French tonneaux, allowing for gentle oxygenation and preservation of varietal character. The estate’s flagship wine is the Chianti Classico, a pure Sangiovese that showcases the elegance, freshness, and complexity of Radda’s high-altitude terroir. Poggerino also produces a Chianti Classico Riserva, selected from the oldest and best-exposed parcels, offering greater depth and aging potential. In addition, the estate makes a limited Merlot-based wine called “Primamateria,” which highlights the versatility of the property’s soils.
Poggerino’s wines are noted for their vibrant fruit, refined tannins, and pronounced minerality. They consistently receive acclaim for their balance, authenticity, and capacity to age gracefully. The estate’s dedication to organic farming and low-intervention winemaking has earned it a loyal following among enthusiasts of traditional Tuscan wines. Beyond wine, Poggerino also operates a small agriturismo, welcoming visitors to experience the estate’s rural charm and hospitality. Guests can stay in restored farmhouses and enjoy tastings, tours, and local cuisine, deepening their connection to the land and its traditions.
Poggerino stands as a benchmark for artisanal Chianti Classico, blending respect for heritage with forward-thinking sustainability. The Lanza family’s hands-on approach ensures that each bottle reflects the unique character of Radda in Chianti, from its stony soils and cool climate to its centuries-old winemaking culture. Through careful stewardship and a passion for Sangiovese, Poggerino continues to set a high standard for quality and authenticity in Tuscany’s historic heartland.
