Montepeloso winery

Montepeloso is a distinguished wine estate located in the Suvereto area of Tuscany’s Maremma region, an area known for its rich soils and Mediterranean climate. Established in the late 1990s, Montepeloso has quickly gained acclaim for its dedication to producing expressive, terroir-driven wines that reflect the unique character of the coastal Tuscan landscape. The estate covers approximately 30 hectares, with around 14 hectares under vine, and is situated on gently rolling hills that benefit from cooling sea breezes and optimal sun exposure. These natural conditions, combined with the estate’s meticulous vineyard management, contribute to the production of wines with depth, structure, and elegance.

The story of Montepeloso took a significant turn in 1999 when Swiss-born Fabio Chiarelotto acquired the property. Chiarelotto, a historian by training and a passionate wine lover, brought a fresh perspective and relentless drive to the estate. His approach has always focused on understanding and maximizing the potential of the local terroir. Chiarelotto undertook a comprehensive replanting of the vineyards, carefully selecting grape varieties and clones best suited to the soils and microclimate. Today, the estate cultivates a mix of international and native varieties, including Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Alicante, Marselan, and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as lesser-known grapes like Aglianco and Malvasia Nera. This blend of tradition and innovation is reflected in Montepeloso’s distinctive wine portfolio.

Montepeloso’s winemaking philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the unique qualities of each vineyard parcel to shine through. In the cellar, the use of oak is judicious, with a preference for large, neutral barrels that preserve the purity of fruit and the nuances of the terroir. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts whenever possible, and the wines are bottled with minimal filtration. This artisanal approach results in wines that are complex, vibrant, and age-worthy, with a remarkable ability to balance power and finesse.

The estate’s flagship wine, Nardo, is a blend dominated by Montepulciano, Sangiovese, and Marselan, and is celebrated for its depth, aromatic complexity, and refined structure. Eneo, another signature wine, is a blend of Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Alicante, and Marselan, and is prized for its balance, freshness, and expressive character. Montepeloso also produces Gabbro, a pure Cabernet Sauvignon that showcases the variety’s concentration and elegance in the Maremma terroir, as well as A Quo, an accessible, vibrant red that offers an introduction to the estate’s style. Each wine in the Montepeloso lineup reflects the estate’s commitment to quality and authenticity.

Montepeloso’s dedication to sustainable viticulture, combined with its innovative yet respectful approach to winemaking, has solidified its reputation as a leading light in the new wave of Tuscan producers. The estate’s wines are regularly praised by critics and sought after by collectors and enthusiasts around the world. Under Fabio Chiarelotto’s guidance, Montepeloso continues to push boundaries while honoring the traditions and natural beauty of the Tuscan coast, crafting wines that are both true to their origins and compelling on the global stage.
