Michele Satta winery
Michele Satta is a pioneering winemaker based in Bolgheri, Tuscany, a region celebrated for its innovative approach to winemaking and its unique terroir. Born in Varese in 1952, Satta moved to Tuscany in the 1970s, where he developed a deep connection with the land and its agricultural traditions. He began his career in viticulture in 1982, initially working as an agronomist and consultant before establishing his own estate in 1983. Over the years, Satta has become known for his commitment to expressing the distinct character of Bolgheri through his wines, while also experimenting with both international and indigenous grape varieties.
Satta’s estate covers approximately 23 hectares of vineyards, situated in the heart of Bolgheri, close to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The proximity to the coast, combined with the region’s diverse soils and microclimates, allows Satta to cultivate a broad range of grape varieties. He was among the first in Bolgheri to plant and champion Sangiovese, Syrah, and Teroldego alongside the more traditional Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. This innovative approach reflects his philosophy of respecting tradition while embracing experimentation to achieve the greatest expression of the terroir.
In the cellar, Michele Satta emphasizes minimal intervention, seeking to preserve the authenticity of the grapes and the nuances of each vintage. Fermentation is conducted with indigenous yeasts, and aging takes place in a combination of barriques and larger oak casks, depending on the wine and the desired style. Satta’s portfolio includes both single-varietal wines and blends, with flagship labels such as “Piastraia”—a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Sangiovese—receiving critical acclaim for their complexity, balance, and longevity. Other notable wines include “Cavaliere,” a pure Sangiovese, and “Syrah,” which showcases the varietal’s adaptability to Bolgheri’s climate.
Satta’s dedication to sustainable viticulture is evident in his organic farming practices, which focus on soil health, biodiversity, and minimal chemical inputs. He believes that healthy vineyards are the foundation for great wines and works tirelessly to maintain harmony between the vines and their environment. This holistic approach extends to every aspect of production, from vineyard management to bottling, ensuring that each wine is a true reflection of its origin.
Today, Michele Satta is regarded as a key figure in the evolution of Bolgheri as a world-class wine region. His independent spirit and willingness to challenge conventions have helped shape the identity of Bolgheri wines, earning the respect of peers and wine lovers alike. The estate remains family-run, with Michele’s children increasingly involved in the business, ensuring the continuation of his vision and values. Through his wines, Satta continues to tell the story of Bolgheri’s land, climate, and people, offering a unique and personal interpretation of one of Italy’s most dynamic wine regions.
