Masseto is an iconic wine estate located in the Bolgheri region of Tuscany, Italy. Established in the 1980s, Masseto was born from the vision of producing a world-class Merlot on the Tuscan coast, a region traditionally dominated by Sangiovese and later celebrated for its “Super Tuscan” blends. The estate is named after its unique vineyard site, characterized by its blue clay soils—known locally as “masso”—which provide ideal conditions for the cultivation of Merlot and impart a distinct character to the wine.
The Masseto vineyard covers approximately 6.6 hectares and is divided into several parcels, each with its own microclimate and soil composition. Since its inaugural vintage in 1986, Masseto has been produced exclusively from Merlot grapes. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by aging in French oak barriques for about two years. Masseto operates as an independent estate but shares a close connection with Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, another prestigious Bolgheri property. In 2019, a state-of-the-art winery dedicated solely to Masseto was inaugurated, designed to enhance precision in winemaking and reflect the estate’s commitment to excellence. The new facility is partially underground, blending seamlessly into the landscape and providing optimal conditions for vinification and aging.
Production at Masseto is extremely limited, with only a few thousand cases produced annually. This rarity, combined with the wine’s critical acclaim and consistent quality, has made Masseto one of the most sought-after Italian wines on the international market. Collectors and connoisseurs prize each vintage, and the wine regularly achieves high scores from leading critics and publications.
