Marc Sorrel winery

Marc Sorrel is a distinguished wine producer based in the northern Rhône Valley, specifically in the prestigious Hermitage appellation. The Sorrel family’s roots in Hermitage date back to the early 20th century, and Marc took over the family estate in 1982, continuing a tradition of crafting expressive, terroir-driven wines. The domaine is relatively small, with just over three hectares under vine, but boasts parcels in some of Hermitage’s most celebrated lieux-dits, including Les Plantiers, Les Greffieux, and the revered Le Méal. Marc Sorrel’s approach to viticulture and winemaking is deeply traditional, emphasizing meticulous vineyard work and minimal intervention in the cellar. The estate practices lutte raisonnée, favoring sustainable methods and hand-harvesting to ensure the highest quality grapes. In the cellar, Sorrel eschews new oak, preferring to age his wines in older barrels and demi-muids to allow the character of the terroir to shine. Fermentations are conducted with indigenous yeasts, and there is little racking or manipulation, resulting in wines that are pure, structured, and capable of long aging.

The core of the domaine’s production centers on Hermitage, both red and white. The red Hermitage, made from Syrah, is known for its depth, complexity, and longevity, often requiring several years to reveal its full potential. The white Hermitage, crafted from Marsanne and a small proportion of Roussanne, displays remarkable richness and nuance, with the ability to evolve beautifully over decades. In addition to Hermitage, Sorrel also produces a small amount of Crozes-Hermitage, offering a more accessible expression of the region’s classic grape varieties. Marc Sorrel’s wines are celebrated for their authenticity and sense of place, reflecting the unique soils and microclimates of Hermitage. The reds are marked by notes of black fruits, spice, and earthy undertones, while the whites are distinguished by their texture, minerality, and layers of stone fruit and floral aromatics.

Despite the domaine’s modest size, Marc Sorrel’s wines have earned a loyal following among collectors and connoisseurs. The estate’s philosophy revolves around patience and respect for tradition, resulting in wines that are both elegant and powerful, with a distinct capacity for aging. Marc Sorrel’s commitment to quality and his deep understanding of Hermitage’s terroir have ensured that his wines consistently rank among the appellation’s finest. In recent years, Marc’s son, Guillaume Sorrel, has joined the domaine, working alongside his father and bringing renewed energy while maintaining the family’s classic style. This generational transition promises to preserve the Sorrel legacy and uphold the estate’s reputation for excellence in Hermitage. With a focus on authenticity, tradition, and a profound respect for the land, Marc Sorrel continues to produce wines that embody the essence of the northern Rhône and the timeless appeal of Hermitage.
