Kellerei Tramin, located in the heart of Alto Adige in northern Italy, stands as one of the region’s most storied and influential wine cooperatives. Founded in 1898 by Christian Schrott, a visionary parish priest and member of the Austrian parliament, the winery was established to unite local growers and raise the quality and reputation of the wines produced in Tramin (Termeno), the birthplace of the aromatic Gewürztraminer grape. Today, Kellerei Tramin brings together around 300 member families who collectively manage approximately 270 hectares of vineyards, cultivating grapes on the steep slopes and varied soils that characterize the area.
The cooperative’s vineyards span elevations ranging from 250 to 850 meters above sea level, creating a unique mosaic of microclimates and terroirs. The region’s dramatic shifts between warm days and cool nights, coupled with the mineral-rich soils and Alpine breezes, foster the slow ripening of grapes and the development of complex aromas and flavors. Kellerei Tramin’s growers follow sustainable and environmentally sensitive viticultural practices, ensuring the health of their vines and the longevity of the land for future generations.
Gewürztraminer is the flagship variety at Kellerei Tramin, and the winery has earned international acclaim for its expressive, aromatic interpretations of this grape. Their portfolio includes several single-vineyard and selection bottlings, such as the iconic Nussbaumer, which consistently garners high praise for its depth, intensity, and balance. In addition to Gewürztraminer, the cooperative produces a diverse range of wines from both indigenous and international varieties, including Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Lagrein, and Pinot Nero. Each wine reflects the distinctiveness of its vineyard origin and the meticulous attention to detail in both vineyard and cellar.
Under the guidance of chief winemaker Willi Stürz, who joined the team in 1992, Kellerei Tramin has embraced a philosophy that marries tradition with innovation. Kellerei Tramin’s striking winery building, designed by architect Werner Tscholl and completed in 2010, serves as a symbol of the cooperative’s commitment to quality and forward-thinking vision. The modern structure, with its dramatic green steel lattice and panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards, welcomes visitors for tastings and tours, offering an immersive experience into the world of Alto Adige wine.
