Gian Luca Mazzella winery

Gian Luca Mazzella comes from a Campanian family that has always made wine, but its long voyage to get back to his land started far away from there. Raising from an aesthetic root, his passion sprouted tasting the great wines of the world. Then he grew a deep knowledge about vine growing and winemaking winning the esteem and confidence of men and women running some of the most famous and secluded cellars of Europe. A detailed experience of the best terroirs, from Mosel to Barolo, from Vosne to Montalcino, that showed precious when he decided to produce his own wine. Aglianico: a unique grape with no genetic ties to other varieties and a long vegetative cycle of 7 months. Alta Valle del Calore: high quote, very complex soils, extreme day-night temperature range. These are the two landmarks of Taurasi, an appellation that has always been regarded among the noblest of Italy, and still have to show its real potential as a world class producing area. The project is based on a commitment to quality with no compromises. This means first of all respecting and reinforcing the deep bounds between the winegrower and nature, between man and place. Small plots (total 5 ha) of vines old up to over a century, late November harvest, dramatically low yields (10 hl/ha on average), spontaneous fermentations, very long ageing in big barrels and ceramic vats, very low added sulphites. The goal is great complexity as the reflex of perfectly mature grapes, extreme purity in the glass, the capability to last decades. In a word, classic wine.
