Gaston Chiquet winery
Gaston Chiquet is a family-owned Champagne producer based in the village of Dizy, in the heart of the Marne Valley. The estate traces its roots back to 1919, when brothers Fernand and Gaston Chiquet became pioneers as some of the first growers in Champagne to bottle their own wines under their own name, rather than selling grapes to larger houses. This independent spirit has defined the Chiquet family’s approach for generations, emphasizing quality, authenticity, and a deep connection to their terroir.
Today, the estate is managed by Antoine and Nicolas Chiquet, representing the eighth generation of winegrowers in the family. They oversee 23 hectares of vineyards spread across some of Champagne’s most prestigious villages, including Dizy, Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, and Hautvillers. The vineyards are planted with the classic Champagne grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. Gaston Chiquet is particularly known for its holdings in Dizy and Aÿ, where the chalky soils and varied exposures produce grapes of exceptional character and finesse.
The Chiquet family’s philosophy centers on meticulous vineyard work and respect for the environment. They employ sustainable viticulture practices, minimizing chemical treatments and encouraging biodiversity. Harvest is carried out by hand, ensuring only the best grapes are selected. In the cellar, the winemaking is gentle and precise, with each parcel vinified separately to express its unique qualities. The wines are aged on their lees for extended periods, often well beyond the minimum requirements, to develop complexity and texture.
Gaston Chiquet produces a range of Champagnes, from non-vintage blends to special cuvées that highlight specific grape varieties or vineyard sites. Their Brut Tradition is a signature wine, blending all three Champagne grapes to create a balanced, expressive style. The Brut Rosé, made primarily from Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir, is admired for its vibrant fruit and finesse. The estate also crafts vintage-dated Champagnes and a rare Blanc de Blancs d’Aÿ, a unique expression of Chardonnay from a village better known for Pinot Noir. These wines are celebrated for their purity, freshness, and ability to reflect their origins.
Throughout its history, Gaston Chiquet has maintained a loyal following among wine lovers and sommeliers who appreciate grower Champagnes that embody a sense of place. The family’s dedication to traditional methods, combined with a willingness to innovate, has ensured that their wines remain both classic and contemporary. Gaston Chiquet stands as a testament to the enduring values of family, craftsmanship, and respect for the land in Champagne.
