Fontanabianca winery

Fontanabianca is a respected wine producer situated in the heart of the Langhe region, specifically in Neive, one of the most prestigious Barbaresco-producing villages in Piedmont, Italy. Established in 1969 by Franco Pola, Fontanabianca has maintained a family-driven ethos, with generations working together to cultivate and vinify wines that express the unique terroir of their land. Today, the estate is managed by Aldo Pola and his son Matteo, who continue the tradition of meticulous vineyard care and thoughtful winemaking.

The estate covers approximately 14 hectares of vineyards, most of which are dedicated to Nebbiolo, the grape behind Barbaresco, as well as Dolcetto, Barbera, and a small amount of Arneis. The vineyards are located on prime south and southwest-facing slopes at altitudes between 250 and 350 meters, benefiting from optimal sunlight and well-drained, calcareous-clay soils. These conditions contribute to the elegance, structure, and aromatic complexity that characterize Fontanabianca’s wines.

In the cellar, Fontanabianca employs a balanced approach that combines traditional methods with modern precision. Fermentation typically takes place in stainless steel tanks to preserve the purity of fruit, while aging occurs in a mix of large Slavonian oak casks and smaller French barriques, depending on the wine and vintage. This careful maturation process allows the wines to develop depth and complexity without overshadowing the varietal character or the nuances of the vineyard sites.

Fontanabianca’s Barbaresco DOCG is the flagship of the estate, known for its refined tannins, vibrant acidity, and layers of red fruit, floral, and earthy notes. The winery also produces Barbaresco Bordini, a cru bottling from a single vineyard, which showcases the distinctive qualities of the Bordini site—typically more structured and age-worthy, with pronounced minerality and spice. Other notable wines include Barbera d’Alba, Dolcetto d’Alba, and Langhe Nebbiolo, all crafted with the same attention to detail and respect for the grape’s natural expression.

Sustainable viticulture is a core value at Fontanabianca. The estate avoids the use of chemical herbicides and pesticides, instead opting for manual vineyard work and organic practices whenever possible. This commitment not only preserves the health of the land for future generations but also ensures that the wines authentically reflect their origin.

Fontanabianca’s philosophy centers on expressing the unique character of Neive’s vineyards through wines that balance tradition and innovation. The Pola family’s deep-rooted connection to their land, combined with a forward-thinking approach to winemaking, has earned the estate a loyal following among wine enthusiasts and critics alike. Their wines are celebrated for their purity, balance, and ability to age gracefully, making them a benchmark for Barbaresco and the broader Langhe region.

With each vintage, Fontanabianca continues to honor the legacy of its founders while embracing new techniques and ideas. The result is a portfolio of wines that capture the essence of Piedmont, offering both immediate pleasure and the promise of evolution in the cellar. Whether enjoyed young or after years of aging, Fontanabianca’s wines stand as a testament to the enduring allure of the Langhe’s rolling hills and the dedication of the family who calls them home.
