Ester Canale Rosso winery
For Ester Canale 1896 marks the birth of the family business. As was customary in the Langhe, at the beginning the production was mixed: fruit, vegetables, cattle breeding and sale of bulk wine. When we think of Barolo s best vineyards, one of the first ones that comes to mind is Vigna Rionda, a narrow strip of limestone facing south, just outside the Serralunga d Alba village. Some of the great names contributed to the fame of this very precious piece of land: Bruno Giacosa, Pira, Oddero, Massolino. Over the years, a Vigna Rionda footprint and style emerged and became a symbol of the Serralunga area: austere, rigorous, vertical wines capable of combining great structure with a kaleidoscope of perfumes and nuances. The Canale/Rosso family has owned its portion since 1934, partially replanted in 2011 and now dedicated to the Ester Canale Nebbiolo. A small fraction (0,4ha) was kept, and it is still in production. In fact, some ancient, thick and curled vines, with roots that go deep 70+ years concentrate all their strength and wisdom into this unbelievable Barolo.
