Edi Simcic winery
Situated in western Slovenia and north-eastern Italy, in the micro region of Gori ka Brda, which was previously part of Italy, Edi Simcic has made a name for himself as the best winemaker of Slovenia. Slovenia has a rich cultural history of wine making existing long before the Romans brought it to France, Italy, and Germany. This history has informed his wine making today, under the Communism in 1948, Simcic had to give up a large portion of grapes to government, completely up-ending his business. However, after the fall of Communism, Simcic made a comeback and continued doing what he loved - winemaking. Presently producing 60,000 bottles a year, Simcic has defeated all obstacles producing quality wine rich of the region s history. Producing majority Duet, a red blend, and Rebula, a white grape variety, Simcic focuses his efforts on producing local rather than adopting a Chardonnay or Sauvignon, which would not tell the story of the land.
