Domaine Georges Roumier winery
Domaine Georges Roumier, located in the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits, is one of the region’s most celebrated wine estates. Founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, the domaine is based in Chambolle-Musigny and has grown from humble beginnings to become a benchmark for red Burgundy. The estate’s reputation is built on its exceptional vineyard holdings, meticulous vineyard management, and a commitment to expressing the unique terroir of each parcel.
Today, the domaine is managed by Christophe Roumier, Georges’ grandson, who took over from his father Jean-Marie in 1982. Christophe has maintained the family’s traditional approach while introducing subtle refinements. The estate covers approximately 12 hectares, with vineyards spread across some of the most prestigious appellations in Burgundy, including Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis, and Corton-Charlemagne. The jewel in the crown is the domaine’s holdings in the legendary Grand Cru vineyards of Bonnes-Mares and Musigny, as well as the highly regarded Premier Cru Les Amoureuses.
The philosophy at Domaine Georges Roumier centers on respect for the land and minimal intervention in the cellar. In the vineyards, Christophe practices lutte raisonnée, a sustainable approach that avoids chemical treatments whenever possible. Vines are carefully pruned to limit yields, ensuring concentration and complexity in the fruit. Harvesting is done by hand, with strict selection of grapes both in the vineyard and at the sorting table to guarantee only the best fruit is used.
In the cellar, the winemaking process is guided by a desire to let the character of each site shine through. Fermentation is carried out with natural yeasts, and the use of new oak is judicious, typically ranging from 15% to 40% depending on the cuvée. The wines are aged in French oak barrels for 16 to 18 months before bottling without fining or filtration, preserving their purity and depth. Christophe’s approach yields wines that are both refined and powerful, marked by elegance, precision, and an unmistakable sense of place.
Domaine Georges Roumier’s wines are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide. The Chambolle-Musigny wines display seductive aromatics, silky textures, and vibrant red fruit, while the Bonnes-Mares and Musigny Grand Crus offer remarkable structure, complexity, and aging potential. Les Amoureuses, often considered a Grand Cru in all but name, is prized for its finesse and floral character. The domaine also produces notable wines from Morey-Saint-Denis and Corton-Charlemagne, broadening its portfolio while maintaining exceptional quality standards.
Despite the global acclaim and demand, Domaine Georges Roumier remains a family-run operation with a focus on tradition and authenticity. Production is limited, and allocation is strict, contributing to the wines’ rarity and desirability. Christophe Roumier’s stewardship ensures that the domaine continues to set the standard for Burgundy, producing wines that capture the essence of their origin and offer profound drinking experiences for those fortunate enough to secure a bottle.
