Domaine Eric de Suremain winery

Domaine Eric de Suremain is a family-run estate located in the heart of Burgundy, specifically in Monthelie, a small village nestled between Volnay and Meursault. The estate has been in the de Suremain family for several generations, and Eric de Suremain took the reins in the late 1970s, bringing a fresh vision rooted in tradition and respect for the land. Covering approximately 7 hectares, the domaine’s holdings include some of the finest parcels in Monthelie, as well as select plots in the neighboring appellations of Rully and Beaune. The vineyards are predominantly planted to Pinot Noir, with a smaller portion dedicated to Chardonnay, reflecting the classic varietal makeup of the Côte de Beaune.

Eric de Suremain has been a committed practitioner of organic and biodynamic viticulture since 1996, long before these methods were widely adopted in Burgundy. The estate’s approach emphasizes minimal intervention, with a strong focus on soil health, biodiversity, and the natural rhythms of the vineyard. All vineyard work, from pruning to harvest, is carried out by hand, and the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides is strictly avoided. Biodynamic preparations are used to enhance soil vitality and vine resilience, contributing to the overall balance and expression of the terroir.

In the cellar, the philosophy is equally attentive and hands-off. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, and the wines are aged in a mix of new and used French oak barrels, with the proportion of new oak kept low to allow the character of the fruit and site to shine through. Sulfur usage is minimal, and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration whenever possible. This patient, artisanal approach results in wines that are pure, expressive, and marked by a distinctive sense of place. The reds, primarily from Monthelie, Volnay, and Beaune, are known for their finesse, aromatic complexity, and vibrant acidity, while the whites, particularly from Rully, offer freshness, minerality, and a delicate balance of fruit and structure.

Domaine Eric de Suremain has built a loyal following among sommeliers, collectors, and Burgundy enthusiasts who appreciate the authenticity and integrity of the wines. The estate’s commitment to sustainable practices and traditional methods has positioned it as a model for responsible viticulture in the region. Annual production remains limited, ensuring close attention to every stage of the process, from vine to bottle. The wines are typically released with some bottle age, allowing them to develop greater harmony and complexity before reaching the market.

Visitors to the domaine are welcomed by Eric and his family, who are passionate about sharing their philosophy and the unique qualities of their vineyards. Tasting at the estate provides a rare opportunity to experience the nuances of Monthelie and its neighboring appellations through wines that are crafted with care, respect, and a deep connection to the land. Domaine Eric de Suremain stands as a testament to the enduring values of family, tradition, and a profound respect for nature in the ever-evolving landscape of Burgundy.
