Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe winery

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe is a historic wine estate located in the heart of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in France’s Southern Rhône Valley. Established in 1898 by Hippolyte Brunier, the domaine has remained under the stewardship of the Brunier family for over a century, now run by the fourth and fifth generations. The estate’s name pays homage to an old telegraph station that once stood on its highest hill, La Crau, a plateau famed for its galet roulés—large, rounded stones that help regulate vine temperature and contribute to the terroir’s uniqueness.

The domaine comprises approximately 65 hectares of vineyards, with the majority planted on La Crau. The soils here are a mix of sand, clay, and limestone, overlaid with the distinctive galet stones. These conditions, combined with the region’s Mediterranean climate, provide an ideal environment for cultivating the classic grape varieties of Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Clairette. Vieux Télégraphe’s vineyards are farmed with a strong respect for tradition and sustainability, with many practices reflecting organic principles.

Winemaking at Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the character of the terroir to shine through. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted before fermentation. The reds are typically fermented in traditional cement vats, with aging taking place in large oak foudres for up to 20 months. This approach preserves freshness and structure, while allowing the wines to develop their complexity and depth. The domaine’s flagship wine, Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge, is celebrated for its power, elegance, and remarkable aging potential, often displaying notes of ripe red fruit, garrigue, spice, and mineral nuances derived from the La Crau plateau.

In addition to their signature red, the domaine also produces a Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, crafted primarily from Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, and Roussanne. This white wine is noted for its freshness, aromatic complexity, and ability to age gracefully, a rarity among southern Rhône whites. The Brunier family also manages several other labels, including Télégramme, a more approachable, earlier-drinking Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and wines from neighboring appellations such as Gigondas and Ventoux.

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe has played a pivotal role in shaping the reputation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape as one of France’s premier wine regions. The estate’s wines are recognized for their authenticity, consistency, and reflection of the unique La Crau terroir. Today, Frédéric and Daniel Brunier continue to uphold the family’s legacy, marrying traditional methods with a commitment to quality and environmental stewardship. Their wines are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide, offering a benchmark expression of Châteauneuf-du-Pape that stands the test of time.
