Domaine des Rouges Queues winery

Domaine des Rouges Queues is a family-run estate located in Sampigny-lès-Maranges, at the southern tip of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. Established in 1998 by Isabelle and Jean-Yves Vantey, the domaine spans approximately 6 hectares of vineyards, primarily in the Maranges appellation, with additional plots in Santenay and Hautes Côtes de Beaune. The estate’s name, “Rouges Queues,” refers to the red-tailed bird, the common redstart, which inhabits the local vineyards and symbolizes the domaine’s deep connection to nature.

From the outset, the Vanteys have committed to organic and biodynamic viticulture, earning organic certification in 2008. Their approach emphasizes respect for the environment, biodiversity, and the health of their soils. They avoid synthetic chemicals, opting instead for natural preparations and manual labor. This philosophy extends to all aspects of vineyard management, including plowing with a horse, hand-harvesting, and minimal intervention in the cellar. The result is a range of wines that express the unique character of their terroirs.

The domaine’s vineyard holdings are diverse, encompassing several prestigious climats. In Maranges, they produce wines from the appellation’s three villages: Sampigny, Dezize, and Cheilly. Their plots include the renowned Premier Cru “La Fussière,” as well as “Clos Roussots” and “Le Goty.” In Santenay, they farm parcels such as “Les Gravières,” and in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune, they cultivate both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The soils vary from limestone to clay, and the estate’s careful parcel-by-parcel approach allows them to highlight the nuances of each site.

In the cellar, the philosophy is guided by minimalism and respect for the grapes. Fermentations are spontaneous, using only indigenous yeasts. The use of sulfur is limited, and the wines are neither fined nor filtered whenever possible. The aging process takes place in oak barrels, with a restrained use of new wood to preserve the purity of fruit and terroir. The wines are bottled according to the lunar calendar, in keeping with biodynamic principles.

Domaine des Rouges Queues produces both red and white wines, with a focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The reds are noted for their finesse, freshness, and aromatic complexity, while the whites display minerality and vibrancy. The estate’s commitment to sustainable viticulture and traditional winemaking has earned them a loyal following among wine enthusiasts who appreciate authenticity and a sense of place.

Visitors to the domaine can experience the Vanteys’ passion firsthand, with tastings offered by appointment. The estate’s website provides detailed information about their philosophy, vineyard sites, and current releases, reflecting their dedication to transparency and connection with their customers. Through their work, Isabelle and Jean-Yves Vantey seek to honor Burgundy’s heritage while embracing innovative, environmentally conscious practices that ensure the vitality of their land for future generations.
