Domaine Comtesse de Cherisey winery
Domaine Comtesse de Chérisey is a family-owned wine estate located in the village of Blagny, nestled on the heights between Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. The estate’s origins trace back to the 19th century, and it has been under the stewardship of the current owners, the Darviot family, since 1998. They are dedicated to preserving the estate’s traditions while embracing sustainable and environmentally friendly viticulture.
The domaine covers approximately 9 hectares, focusing primarily on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. The vineyards are situated on exceptional terroirs, notably in the Blagny 1er Cru and Meursault 1er Cru appellations, as well as Puligny-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin. The soils are predominantly limestone and clay, providing ideal conditions for producing wines of great finesse and minerality.
Vineyard work is carried out with meticulous care, emphasizing respect for the environment. The team practices lutte raisonnée (reasoned struggle), avoiding synthetic chemicals and promoting biodiversity. Manual labor is preferred to preserve the health and balance of the vines, with hand-harvesting ensuring only the best grapes are selected at optimal ripeness.
In the cellar, the philosophy is to let the terroir express itself with minimal intervention. Grapes are gently pressed, and fermentation occurs naturally with indigenous yeasts. The wines are aged in French oak barrels, with a judicious use of new oak to enhance complexity without overpowering the purity of the fruit and the expression of the vineyard sites. The aging process typically lasts 12 to 18 months, allowing the wines to develop texture and depth while retaining freshness.
Domaine Comtesse de Chérisey’s white wines, particularly those from the Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru and Puligny-Montrachet sites, are noted for their elegance, precision, and vibrant minerality. They display expressive aromas of white flowers, citrus, and stone fruits, with a palate characterized by balance, tension, and a long, saline finish. The reds, though produced in smaller quantities, showcase the finesse and aromatic complexity of Pinot Noir, with notes of red berries, earth, and subtle spice.
The domaine is committed to authenticity, producing wines that reflect the unique character of each parcel. Bottlings are typically single-vineyard, highlighting the diversity and richness of the estate’s terroirs. Production is limited, ensuring a focus on quality over quantity.
Visitors are welcomed to the estate by appointment, where they can discover the history of the domaine, tour the vineyards, and taste the wines in the cellar. The family’s approach combines tradition with a forward-looking vision, aiming to produce wines that are true to their origins and capable of aging gracefully.
Domaine Comtesse de Chérisey stands as a testament to the potential of Blagny and its surrounding vineyards, offering wines that are both expressive and refined. Through careful vineyard management, respectful winemaking, and a deep connection to their land, the Darviot family continues to uphold the legacy of this historic Burgundy estate.
