Domaine Armand Rousseau winery
Domaine Armand Rousseau is a historic family-run wine estate located in Gevrey-Chambertin, in the heart of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits. Established in the early 20th century by Armand Rousseau, the domaine has grown over four generations, combining tradition and innovation to produce some of the region’s most sought-after Pinot Noir wines. The estate began with Armand Rousseau acquiring several vineyard parcels and quickly became known for its meticulous vineyard management and dedication to quality. Over time, the domaine expanded its holdings, focusing on prestigious grand cru and premier cru appellations, including Chambertin, Clos de Bèze, Clos Saint Jacques, Charmes-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, and more.
Today, the domaine is managed by Eric Rousseau, Armand’s grandson, who has continued the family philosophy of respecting the land and traditional Burgundian winemaking practices while also embracing modern techniques where beneficial. The estate covers 15.33 hectares, with a significant portion dedicated to grand cru vineyards. The vines, some of which are over 100 years old, are cultivated with great care, using sustainable viticultural methods that prioritize soil health and biodiversity. Manual harvesting and strict selection ensure only the best grapes are used in the domaine’s wines.
Winemaking at Domaine Armand Rousseau is characterized by minimal intervention, aiming to express the unique terroirs of each vineyard. Fermentation occurs in open wooden vats, with gentle extraction to preserve the purity of fruit and finesse. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, with a restrained use of new oak to maintain balance and allow the nuances of each cru to shine. The resulting wines are celebrated for their elegance, complexity, and remarkable aging potential. Each bottle reflects the estate’s commitment to authenticity and excellence, capturing the essence of Burgundy’s finest terroirs.
The domaine’s portfolio features a range of wines, from village-level Gevrey-Chambertin to some of the most illustrious grand crus, such as Chambertin and Clos de Bèze. These wines consistently receive acclaim from critics and collectors worldwide, prized for their depth, aromatic complexity, and refined structure. Domaine Armand Rousseau’s approach emphasizes the importance of heritage, family values, and respect for nature, with each generation contributing to the estate’s ongoing evolution.
Visitors to the domaine can experience the family’s passion and dedication firsthand, though access is limited and typically reserved for professionals and long-standing clients. The estate’s philosophy centers on sharing the unique identity of each vineyard, preserving the legacy of Armand Rousseau, and ensuring that future generations can continue to produce exceptional wines from these historic plots. Domaine Armand Rousseau stands as a benchmark for Burgundy, embodying the region’s rich traditions and a relentless pursuit of quality.
