Domaine Andre Brunel Les Cailloux winery
Domaine André Brunel is a historic family estate located in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the southern Rhône Valley of France. With roots tracing back to the 18th century, the Brunel family has cultivated vineyards for generations, passing down their expertise and passion for winemaking. The estate is currently managed by Fabrice Brunel, who continues the tradition of crafting expressive wines that reflect the unique terroir of their vineyards.
The estate covers 22 hectares, including prestigious plots in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes du Rhône, and IGP Vaucluse. The flagship vineyard, Les Cailloux, is situated on the famous galets roulés (rounded pebbles) of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which contribute to the power and complexity of the wines. The estate also manages old-vine Grenache and other traditional Rhône varieties such as Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Clairette to create both red and white wines of distinction.
André Brunel’s philosophy centers on respect for the land and minimal intervention in the cellar. Sustainable viticulture practices are employed, and the estate is certified High Environmental Value (HVE), reflecting a commitment to biodiversity and environmental stewardship. In the vineyards, careful attention is paid to soil health, vine balance, and low yields to ensure the highest quality fruit. Harvesting is done by hand, allowing for rigorous selection of grapes at optimal ripeness.
In the winery, traditional methods are complemented by modern techniques to highlight the character of each vintage. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, and aging is carried out in a combination of stainless steel, concrete vats, and large oak foudres, depending on the cuvée. The estate focuses on producing wines that are both approachable in their youth and capable of long aging, emphasizing purity of fruit, finesse, and elegance.
The Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Cailloux red is the estate’s signature wine, blending Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault from old vines to create a rich, complex, and spicy wine with notes of ripe fruit, garrigue, and subtle oak. The white Châteauneuf-du-Pape, made from Clairette, Grenache Blanc, and Roussanne, is fresh and aromatic, with floral and citrus notes. The Cuvée Centenaire, produced only in exceptional vintages from century-old Grenache vines, is a rare and highly sought-after wine, showcasing concentration, depth, and remarkable longevity.
In addition to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the estate produces Côtes du Rhône and IGP Vaucluse wines under the André Brunel and Domaine de la Becassonne labels. These wines offer exceptional value and typicity, expressing the fruit-forward and spicy character of the southern Rhône. The estate’s commitment to quality is reflected in consistently high critical acclaim and a loyal following among wine enthusiasts worldwide.
Domaine André Brunel welcomes visitors for tastings and tours by appointment, offering an opportunity to experience the estate’s heritage and the diversity of its wines.
