Coche Dury winery

Coche-Dury is a legendary wine estate located in Meursault, Burgundy, France, celebrated for producing some of the world’s most sought-after white wines. The domaine was established in the 1920s, but its rise to international acclaim began under Jean-François Coche, who took over in the 1970s. Today, the family-run estate is managed by Jean-François and his son Raphaël, who continue the tradition of meticulous vineyard management and winemaking that has made Coche-Dury a benchmark for Burgundy Chardonnay.

The estate covers approximately 10.5 hectares, predominantly planted with Chardonnay, but also includes small parcels of Aligoté and Pinot Noir. The core of Coche-Dury’s holdings lies in Meursault, with prized plots in some of the village’s finest lieux-dits, such as Les Rougeots, Les Chevalières, and Les Perrières. In addition to Meursault, the domaine produces highly limited wines from Puligny-Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, and Volnay, among others. Each vineyard is farmed with exceptional attention to detail, employing sustainable practices and low yields to ensure the highest quality of fruit.

Winemaking at Coche-Dury is characterized by traditional methods and an unwavering commitment to quality. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, followed by gentle pressing and fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The wines are aged in oak barrels, with a judicious use of new oak, typically around 30-50% for the top cuvées. Extended lees contact and regular bâtonnage contribute to the wines’ signature texture and complexity. The result is white Burgundy of remarkable purity, intensity, and longevity, with a distinctive mineral character and subtle, well-integrated oak influence.

Coche-Dury’s Meursaults are celebrated for their expressive aromatics, combining notes of citrus, stone fruits, hazelnut, and a unique gunflint minerality. The flagship Meursault Les Perrières Premier Cru is particularly revered, often rivaling Grand Crus in depth and aging potential. The domaine’s Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is produced in minuscule quantities and is widely regarded as one of the greatest expressions of Chardonnay in the world, prized for its power, precision, and complexity.

The estate’s red wines, though produced in smaller quantities, also attract significant attention. The Volnay and Bourgogne Rouge display elegance, finesse, and vibrant fruit character, reflecting the same dedication to quality as the whites. Coche-Dury’s wines are released in very limited quantities, and their rarity has made them highly collectible, with bottles often commanding premium prices at auction and on the secondary market.

Despite their global reputation, the Coche family remains humble and deeply rooted in the traditions of Burgundy. They shun publicity, focusing instead on their craft and the unique terroir of their vineyards. The domaine’s philosophy centers on respect for the land, rigorous selection, and a hands-on approach in both the vineyard and the cellar. This dedication has ensured that each bottle bearing the Coche-Dury name reflects the authenticity and excellence for which Burgundy is known.

In summary, Coche-Dury stands as a paragon of Burgundian winemaking, producing wines of unmatched character, finesse, and aging potential. Their commitment to tradition, quality, and terroir continues to inspire wine lovers and collectors around the globe.
