Castello Pomino winery

Castello Pomino, part of the Frescobaldi family estates, is nestled in the heart of Tuscany, surrounded by the enchanting forests and hills of the Apennines. Established in 1500, Pomino has a long-standing history of winemaking excellence, combining tradition and innovation. The estate is located at high altitudes, between 400 and 750 meters above sea level, making it one of Tuscany’s highest vineyards. This unique location, with its cooler climate and mineral-rich soils, has allowed Pomino to cultivate grape varieties not typically found in Tuscany, such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Merlot, alongside traditional Sangiovese.

The estate covers 1,450 hectares, of which 108 are dedicated to vineyards, and the rest are lush woodlands, olive groves, and chestnut forests. The diverse terroir provides ideal conditions for producing elegant and aromatic wines. The Pomino DOC, established in 1894, was one of the first recognized appellations in Italy, underscoring the estate’s pioneering spirit and commitment to quality.

Castello Pomino’s winemaking philosophy blends respect for heritage with modern techniques. The historic cellars, built in the 19th century, house cutting-edge technology and traditional oak barrels, enabling the creation of wines with depth, complexity, and finesse. The estate is known for its sustainable practices, preserving the natural environment and promoting biodiversity within its lands.

The portfolio includes a range of white, red, and sparkling wines. Notable labels are Pomino Bianco, a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco, known for its fresh floral notes and minerality; Pomino Benefizio, an iconic barrel-fermented Chardonnay; Pomino Pinot Nero, a refined red with delicate aromas and silky tannins; and Leonia, a metodo classico sparkling wine named after Leonia Frescobaldi, a visionary figure in the estate’s history. These wines express the unique character of Pomino’s high-altitude vineyards and the estate’s dedication to quality.

The estate itself is a picturesque destination, featuring the historic Castello, elegant gardens, and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and forests. Visitors can enjoy guided tours, tastings, and immersive experiences that showcase the estate’s rich history, winemaking traditions, and connection to the land. Castello Pomino is not only a producer of distinguished wines but also a guardian of Tuscan heritage and natural beauty.
