Cantina del Pino winery
Cantina del Pino is a historic winery located in Barbaresco, in the heart of the Langhe region of Piedmont, Italy. The estate is deeply rooted in tradition, with a family history spanning over a century. The vineyards have been owned by the Vacca family since the early 20th century, and today, the winery is led by winemaker Renato Vacca, who continues the legacy of producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of Barbaresco.
The name Cantina del Pino comes from the large pine tree that stands at the entrance of the estate, planted by the great-grandfather of Renato Vacca. The tree has become a symbol of the winery, representing its connection to the land and its dedication to preserving the heritage of the region. The estate covers approximately 8 hectares of vineyards, all situated in some of the most prestigious crus of Barbaresco, including Ovello, Albesani, Gallina, and Starderi. These sites are recognized for their exceptional microclimates and soils, contributing to the distinctive character of the wines.
Cantina del Pino is committed to sustainable viticulture, employing traditional methods in the vineyard and the cellar. The vines are cultivated with respect for the environment, using minimal chemical intervention and careful manual work throughout the growing season. Harvesting is done by hand to ensure only the best grapes are selected. In the cellar, the philosophy is to intervene as little as possible, allowing the natural qualities of the grapes and the terroir to shine through. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, and aging takes place in large Slavonian oak casks, which impart subtlety and elegance to the wines without overpowering their intrinsic flavors.
The winery’s portfolio centers on Nebbiolo, the noble grape of Barbaresco. Cantina del Pino produces several expressions of Barbaresco DOCG, each reflecting the nuances of its specific vineyard site. The Barbaresco Ovello is noted for its structure and complexity, while the Barbaresco Albesani is celebrated for its finesse and aromatic intensity. In addition to these single-vineyard wines, the estate offers a classic Barbaresco, which blends grapes from different sites to achieve balance and harmony. Other wines include Dolcetto d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba, and Langhe Nebbiolo, each crafted with the same attention to detail and respect for tradition.
Cantina del Pino’s wines are characterized by their elegance, depth, and capacity to age gracefully. The estate’s approach emphasizes authenticity and a sense of place, striving to capture the essence of Barbaresco in every bottle. The winery welcomes visitors for tastings and tours, offering an opportunity to experience the beauty of the Langhe landscape and the passion that goes into each wine. Through a combination of heritage, meticulous vineyard management, and a dedication to quality, Cantina del Pino stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Barbaresco and the artistry of winemaking in Piedmont.
