Bernhard Ott winery

Weingut Bernhard Ott is a family-owned winery located in Feuersbrunn, in the Wagram region of Austria. The Ott family has been cultivating vines in this area since 1889, with the current generation led by Bernhard Ott, who took over the estate in 1993. The winery is celebrated for its dedication to Grüner Veltliner, which forms the core of their production, reflecting the unique terroir of Wagram's loess soils.

The philosophy at Weingut Ott centers on a deep respect for nature and the environment. Since 2006, the vineyards have been managed according to biodynamic principles, with certification achieved in 2018. This approach emphasizes the importance of soil health, biodiversity, and natural cycles, aiming to produce wines that are authentic expressions of their origin. The estate covers approximately 40 hectares, with the majority planted to Grüner Veltliner, alongside smaller parcels of Riesling and other traditional Austrian varieties.

Ott's vineyards are situated on the south-facing slopes of the Wagram, benefiting from a unique microclimate and the mineral-rich loess soils that impart a distinctive character to the wines. The most prized sites include Rosenberg, Spiegel, Stein, and Feuersbrunner. Each vineyard is carefully managed, with hand-harvesting and meticulous selection of grapes to ensure optimal quality.

In the cellar, Bernhard Ott employs a minimalist approach, allowing the natural qualities of the grapes and terroir to shine. Fermentation is primarily spontaneous, using native yeasts, and the wines are aged in large traditional oak casks. The result is a range of wines that are precise, elegant, and expressive, with a focus on balance, purity, and longevity. Ott's Grüner Veltliners are known for their vibrant acidity, complexity, and ability to age gracefully.

The winery produces several cuvées, each reflecting the unique characteristics of their respective vineyards. The entry-level 'Am Berg' offers a fresh and lively introduction to the estate's style, while single-vineyard bottlings such as 'Rosenberg,' 'Spiegel,' and 'Stein' showcase greater depth and complexity. These wines have received critical acclaim and are sought after by collectors and wine enthusiasts worldwide.

Weingut Ott is also committed to sustainability beyond the vineyard. The estate uses renewable energy, avoids synthetic chemicals, and prioritizes environmentally friendly practices in all aspects of production. Visitors are welcomed at the winery, where they can experience guided tastings and learn about the Ott family's history, philosophy, and winemaking methods.

Bernhard Ott has played a significant role in elevating the reputation of Austrian wine on the international stage. His commitment to quality, innovation, and tradition has established Weingut Ott as a benchmark for Grüner Veltliner and a leading voice in sustainable viticulture. The estate continues to evolve, guided by a passion for excellence and a deep connection to the land.
