Attilio Ghisolfi winery
Ghisolfi is a family-owned winery located in the heart of the Barolo region in Piedmont, Italy, with a history that dates back to the early 20th century. The estate was established by the Ghisolfi family, who originally cultivated grapes and other crops, but shifted their focus to wine production in the 1980s under the guidance of Gianmarco Ghisolfi. Today, the winery is managed by Gianmarco and his son, Paolo, who continue to uphold the family’s dedication to quality and tradition.
The Ghisolfi estate covers about 10 hectares of vineyards, primarily situated in the prestigious Bussia area, one of Barolo’s most celebrated crus. The vineyards are planted mainly with Nebbiolo, the grape variety used to produce Barolo, but also include Dolcetto and Barbera. The unique terroir, characterized by calcareous-clay soils and optimal sun exposure, allows the Ghisolfi family to craft wines that reflect the distinctiveness of their land.
Ghisolfi’s philosophy centers on meticulous vineyard management and minimal intervention in the cellar. Vineyard practices include careful pruning, green harvesting, and sustainable methods to ensure the health of the vines and the quality of the grapes. Harvesting is done by hand, allowing for the selection of only the best fruit. In the cellar, the family employs traditional winemaking techniques alongside modern technology to achieve elegance and balance in their wines. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, and aging takes place in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks and smaller French oak barrels, depending on the wine.
The winery’s flagship wine is Barolo Bussia, made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes grown in the Bussia cru. This wine is known for its complexity, structure, and aging potential, displaying aromas of red fruit, spices, and floral notes, with a palate that is both powerful and refined. In addition to Barolo, Ghisolfi produces Barbera d’Alba, Dolcetto d’Alba, and Langhe Nebbiolo, each expressing the character of their respective grape varieties and the unique terroir of the estate. Limited-production wines such as Barolo Bussia Riserva and Barolo Bussia Fantini are created in exceptional vintages, offering collectors and enthusiasts a deeper expression of the estate’s capabilities.
Ghisolfi is committed to sustainability and respect for the environment, using integrated pest management and natural fertilizers to minimize their ecological footprint. The family’s approach ensures that the vineyards remain healthy and productive for future generations. Visitors to the estate are welcomed for guided tours and tastings, where they can experience the passion and expertise that go into every bottle. The winery also participates in local and international wine events, sharing their wines with a global audience.
Throughout its history, Ghisolfi has remained true to its roots, combining tradition and innovation to produce wines that are authentic representations of Barolo and the Langhe. The family’s dedication to quality, respect for the land, and commitment to excellence have earned their wines recognition among enthusiasts and critics alike. With each vintage, Ghisolfi continues to honor the legacy of their ancestors while looking to the future, ensuring that their wines remain a benchmark for the region.
