About Willi Opitz

The winery is located in the municipality of Illmitz in the Burgenland wine-growing region of Neusiedlersee (Austria). Attached is a guest house. There are also supporting programs for the festivals in M rbisch and Margarethen or a day with a carriage ride in the National Park Neusiedlersee. The trained mechanical engineer Willi Opitz began his career as a winegrower in 1995 and is considered one of the best advertisers for Austrian wine abroad. The main white wine varieties are Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Welschriesling, and for dessert wines Muscat Ottonel, Gew rztraminer and Scheurebe. The most important red wine variety is Pinot Noir, from which the entire spectrum is produced, from dry red wines, ros and sparkling wines to Trockenbeerenauslese and vinegar. The other red wine varieties are Zweigelt, St. Laurent and Blaufr nkisch. A specialty of the house is the white and red reed wines 'Schilfmandl', named after a self-developed procedure. The flagship of the house is the Zweigelt straw wine 'Opitz One', named after the famous Opus One in California; a special bottling of which is 'Mr. President'. Around 75,000 bottles of wine are produced annually, of which white wines, red wines and dessert wines each account for a third. The products are exported to many European countries, as well as China, Japan, Malaysia, the USA, Canada and South America. In 2005, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the company, it was the first winery to be awarded the Export Prize of the Austrian Economy.
