About Gaja
Gaja is one of Italy’s most influential and respected wine producers, based in the Piedmont region. Founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja in the village of Barbaresco, the estate has remained family-owned for five generations. Today, it is led by Angelo Gaja, who joined the family business in 1961 and is widely credited with revolutionizing Italian winemaking. Under his leadership, Gaja has become synonymous with quality, innovation, and a modern approach that respects tradition while embracing change.
The Gaja estate covers more than 92 hectares of vineyards in Barbaresco and Barolo, as well as holdings in Tuscany. The core of Gaja’s production focuses on Nebbiolo, the grape behind Barbaresco and Barolo, but the estate also produces wines from Barbera, Dolcetto, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. Gaja’s Barbaresco DOCG is its flagship wine, crafted from selected parcels and aged in both French oak and large traditional casks to balance structure and elegance. The portfolio also includes single-vineyard bottlings such as Sorì San Lorenzo, Sorì Tildìn, and Costa Russi, each expressing unique terroir characteristics.
Angelo Gaja introduced a number of innovations that set the estate apart. He was among the first in Piedmont to use temperature-controlled fermentation, green harvesting, and French barriques for aging. These techniques, combined with rigorous vineyard management and low yields, have elevated the quality of Gaja wines and set new standards for the region. Gaja also made the bold decision in the 1990s to declassify some of its most prestigious single-vineyard Barbaresco wines to the Langhe DOC, allowing greater flexibility in blending and winemaking.
In addition to its Piedmont roots, Gaja expanded into Tuscany in the 1990s, acquiring the Pieve Santa Restituta estate in Montalcino and Ca’ Marcanda in Bolgheri. These properties produce acclaimed Brunello di Montalcino and Super Tuscan blends, further cementing the Gaja name as a leader in Italian wine. The family’s commitment to sustainability is evident in their vineyard practices, which prioritize biodiversity, soil health, and minimal use of chemicals.
Gaja wines are celebrated for their balance, complexity, and ability to age gracefully. They have garnered international acclaim and are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide. The estate continues to innovate while maintaining a deep respect for the traditions that have shaped its identity. Today, Angelo Gaja is joined by his children, Gaia, Rossana, and Giovanni, ensuring that the family legacy will continue into the future. Gaja represents a unique blend of heritage and forward-thinking vision, consistently producing wines that reflect the character of their origins and the passion of their makers.
