About Descendientes de J. Palacios
Descendientes de J. Palacios is a celebrated winery located in Bierzo, Spain, founded in 1999 by Álvaro Palacios and his nephew Ricardo Pérez Palacios. The project was established to honor Álvaro’s father, José Palacios, and to explore the unique potential of the Mencía grape in the region’s ancient vineyards. Bierzo, situated in northwest Spain, offers a distinctive terroir with its slate and quartz soils, steep hillsides, and a climate influenced by both Atlantic and continental elements. This combination creates ideal conditions for producing elegant, expressive wines with vibrant acidity, depth, and minerality.
The estate focuses on old-vine Mencía, with many of the vineyards planted between 50 and 100 years ago, and some even older. These old bush vines are cultivated organically and biodynamically, reflecting the winery’s commitment to sustainability and respect for the land. The vineyards are scattered around the village of Corullón, where the dramatic slopes and diverse soils contribute to the complexity and individuality of each wine. The approach in both the vineyard and the cellar is guided by a philosophy of minimal intervention, allowing the character of each site to shine through in the finished wines.
Descendientes de J. Palacios produces a range of wines that highlight the unique qualities of Bierzo’s terroir. The entry-level Pétalos del Bierzo is a regional blend that captures the energy and floral character of Mencía, offering a vibrant introduction to the estate’s style. Above this, the Corullón bottling is sourced from select old-vine parcels around the village, delivering greater depth, complexity, and aging potential. The winery’s most prized offerings are its limited single-vineyard wines: Moncerbal, Las Lamas, and the rare La Faraona. These cuvées are produced in tiny quantities from exceptional sites, each expressing a distinct personality shaped by soil, exposure, and microclimate.
In the cellar, Álvaro and Ricardo employ traditional winemaking techniques, including gentle extraction, indigenous yeast fermentations, and aging in a mix of large oak foudres and barrels. This careful approach preserves the purity of fruit and the nuances of each vineyard, resulting in wines that are both refined and expressive. The use of biodynamic principles extends to every aspect of production, from composting and cover crops in the vineyard to lunar cycles guiding work in the winery.
Descendientes de J. Palacios has played a crucial role in elevating the reputation of Bierzo and the Mencía grape on the world stage. The wines are celebrated for their aromatic complexity, finesse, and ability to age gracefully. The estate’s dedication to organic and biodynamic farming, combined with a deep respect for tradition and terroir, has set a benchmark for quality in the region. Today, Descendientes de J. Palacios stands as a testament to the vision and passion of its founders, producing some of Spain’s most compelling and sought-after wines from the heart of Bierzo.
