About Buisson Charles
Buisson-Charles is a family-owned wine estate located in Meursault, at the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. The domaine traces its origins back to 1835, with successive generations committed to crafting exceptional wines that express the unique terroir of Meursault and its neighboring appellations. Today, the estate is managed by Catherine and Patrick Essa, who continue the family tradition with a focus on respect for the land, meticulous vineyard work, and precise winemaking.
The estate cultivates approximately 6.5 hectares of vines, with a particular emphasis on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Their holdings include prestigious parcels in Meursault, such as Meursault Vieilles Vignes, Meursault Les Tessons, Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes, and Meursault 1er Cru Les Bouches-Chères, as well as vineyards in Volnay, Pommard, Corton, and Chassagne-Montrachet. The diversity of terroirs allows Buisson-Charles to produce a broad range of wines, each reflecting its origin’s character and complexity.
Vineyard management at Buisson-Charles follows sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. The estate avoids herbicides and chemical fertilizers, opting for traditional plowing, organic amendments, and careful canopy management to promote healthy vines and balanced yields. Harvesting is done by hand, ensuring that only the best grapes reach the cellar.
In the winery, the philosophy centers on minimal intervention and gentle handling. Grapes are sorted meticulously before pressing or destemming, depending on the cuvée. Whites are pressed slowly and fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak barrels, where they remain on the lees for extended periods to develop richness and complexity. Reds are vinified with a proportion of whole clusters, depending on the vintage, and are aged in oak barrels to enhance structure and aromatic depth.
The resulting wines are known for their purity, elegance, and ability to age gracefully. Meursault cuvées display classic notes of white flowers, citrus, and stone fruits, underpinned by mineral tension and a subtle touch of oak. The red wines, including Volnay and Pommard, offer vibrant fruit, finesse, and refined tannins, reflecting the finesse of their respective terroirs.
Buisson-Charles also offers limited bottlings from select vineyard parcels and old vines, highlighting the estate’s commitment to showcasing the nuances of each site. The domaine’s approach has garnered recognition from wine lovers and critics alike, who appreciate the authenticity and precision of their wines.
Visitors to Buisson-Charles can arrange tastings by appointment, experiencing firsthand the estate’s dedication to quality and the unique expression of Burgundy’s celebrated vineyards. The domaine emphasizes a warm, personal welcome and is passionate about sharing the story behind each bottle.
Buisson-Charles embodies the spirit of Meursault and Burgundy, blending tradition with thoughtful innovation. With a deep respect for the land and a relentless pursuit of excellence, the estate continues to produce wines that capture the essence of their origins and offer memorable experiences to those who enjoy them.
